INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have my first Isbar egg!!!!! Two days in a row! A real pretty sage green so far, I can't wait to see what the other two girls give me!!! The one on the left is the Isbar egg, the one on the right is one of my silkie pullet eggs (aso a new layer!).

I haven't posted pics of the Isbars in a while. The girls had already gone to bed but here is a picture of Harris the Blue Isbar Roo. He is a very pretty boy and very well mannered!

I need to try to get some good shots of the girls this weekend. Here is my favorite girl, Pee Wee, one of the Birchen Marans from Brad. She was the gender confused one as a baby, and then had a bout with broodiness a few weeks ago. I managed to talk her out of it. She is super friendly!

And here is the Hedemora pair.

In other news, I spent much of the day building an auto door out of a car antenna and timer with a light sensor to open and shut it. Big shout out to HoosierCheetah for all his help! I will probably want to build one more before winter

. The Isbar pen is predator safe but I want the wind to be blocked at night as it gets cold (and blue silkie sleeps right next to the door by herself and I don't want her getting soaked in foul weather).

Welcome to all the new folks!

One of the hard part of chickens is mixing different ages. Hens and chicks don't mix well unless the hen sat on the eggs and still likes the chicks.
Here is a link to the Ideal hatchery. Click shop online, scroll to the bottom left for advertised specials. Click specials followup with a click on the surprise special. Type in the number you want on the pullet line (the lower line). follow prompts and the order should be about $50 for 25 female chicks called pullets on the order form but pullet can also men a female chick that is closer to laying. My EE (Easter Eggers) and RIR (Rhode Island Reds) are at the point of lay so much to big to mix in with little day old chicks.

editing to add if you don't want to keep all 25 you can order straight run and post the roosters on Craigslist for $5 once they are around 8 weeks old. Or you can raise up the roosters and have a few chicken dinners.
But know that ordering straight run does not always save you money in the end. The chicks are cheaper but the roosters eat more and if you don't sell them off they will really eat more during the winter.
OK Sally... I did it... I have ordered 10 pullets!! Shipping to me on the 20th... Cant wait to see what we get :)

Enjoying some evening free range time. My daughter took these photos. I love the sun shining through in this one.

After they had plenty of time for bug and frog hunting we spent some time getting them comfortable being held. Scratch made the perfect lure, lol. Esther (in the foreground) and Houdini (at the back) are two of our three EEs. They are bookends to most of our BOs and Red Stars. Three of our four RSs are now laying. Woo hoo!

Fred even took time to enjoy the treat.

Here's my hubby - aka the Pied Piper of Chickens. As soon as they saw him get the cup of scratch out of the coop they were right behind him. They could hardly wait until he sat down. ;-)
