Started nursing school yesterday so I have been very busy.

Just now trying to catch up on the thread. I did get a couple of pics of the newbies, but they are not the greatest. Will try to get some better ones this weekend. Also, my frizzles are still very small and have just started to get their feathers so it's not real prominent yet. I can't wait for them to get a bit bigger.

This is Joni and Chachi, I think they are partridge cochins. What color would you guys say? (Never mind Spike, he's a photo bomber)


This one is just a few days old. Can't wait to see what color it will turn out to be. (I am really wanting a lavender cochin)


Group photo ( the bigger black and white one is the frizzle) the lady I got her from said it was spotted. Does anyone know what that might turn out to be?

There is a great mill in Martinsville ~ Morgan county mill.
Umbarger is in Bargersville but they don't mix their own chicken feed. Still if you have other animals their show feed is supposed to be good.
Lowes Pellets has 2 locations ~ only the southern one is open on Saturdays. Their food is working out well so far. My nubian goat breeder highly recommended them. My DH went and confirmed that they are not a small operation. I think I'm going to see what the minimum order is for a custom feed though. Their layer is 16% and I would prefer a bit higher 18-20% for my breeders.
Lowes by far has the best prices for the items I have ordered. While they do not deliver small orders they give you a discount for picking it up. Then another discount if you pay in cash.

Where is the mill in Martinsville? Are you talking about the Co-Op on Walnut St? I typically always buy at RK here, because the Co-Op is never open when I'm not working!

are these hard to grow? They look like a wonderful shade protection for a run's fence. Brad ~ I'm looking forward to seeing chicks. And now we have mud here. You missed seeing it by about 2 hours or less.

Thanks. It didn't rain on my way home until I got to pick up the cemani eggs. It never got dark or cloudy but crazy lightning and thunder. Then started to rain but not hard and not very long

I'm thinking the shade/coolness of the block. I have slate tile on PVC legs I put some feeders and waterers on. The chickens do the same under them.

Not bein able to get aroun plays a big toll on then. I ha girl with the same issue though I don't think her legs were broke. She would eat a loot but lost a lot of weight. Give her a month of so and see how she is gaining. Feed things like BOSS, corn, oatmeal, maybe even some bread

I have so many on my wish list for next year it aint funny now, I have to make room first. I have some pullets I'm not real happy with waiting to see what goes on this winter. And SOME ONE is supposed to be selling me some Lav. Cochin eggs next spring..............

and I'm getting some blk cochin eggs from another someone... lol So right now I have to say ............ no.................... that was hard.

Just took these pics of my Sunflowers. I can't believe they got this huge!!! The flowers themselves are larger than a dinner plate!!!

they do get big. I used to plant them for my Cocktails every year and dry the seeds, they really loved them.

My three extra cockerels and four (red Sexlink) hens have a new home starting tomorrow! AND I'm getting mating pair of... Oh jeez I forgot the name of th breed... That's what two hours of sleep in 36 hrs does for you! Lol

Kids got me up early so I took advantage of the cooler morning to sort through my birds. It's been a while since I've had my hands on them, holy cow my production reds are heavy! And I have more cockerels than I thought!! I'll have some hens and a few pullets for sale here soon if anyone is interested. I'll post what once I sort through my list.

Hope everyone that was up in the middle of the night got a little sleep at least!

Where is your favorite mill, what do you get there, and what are some prices there?

I know, I don't ask for much. ;-) But, I've tried looking around on my own, and it's like they're all hiding.

by the time I got to reply to your post everyone else already said what I was going to..... lol Except Morgans but they are in Terre Haute.

Just sold my Birchen Marans and legbars! It will be so much easier this winter and feed bill will be much less as well. I will miss them. Loved their personalities, especially the Marans.

Yes mine were always under my feet when I was out with them! They were shy around new people though and would always hide when people stopped over lol. Yes, they are very broody! I didn't know that about them. I had to find one of the hens this morning and she was sitting on a pile of eggs!

Momma hen and chicks are still missing. Not looking good. But if they show up she will go back with the rest of her flock.

I agree - I think it will just take time for her to recover and gain her health again.

If she were my kiddo I'd sneak her some extra animal protein every day (raw ground meat from a clean source, tiny chopped liver, bugs, etc.), a bit of brewer's yeast in her feed, and maybe even some avian probiotics during the next few weeks.

Thanks, I have all that but the avian probiotics, will get some this weekend. Will add this to her menu ...

I removed the wire gate it got it's head stuck in.
I am also worried we are going to lose another one. I have been treating for coccidia for 3 days now. Something is not right with the way his eyes look. Any ideas?


Anyone know what this chick is? It came from a black copper Marans hatching egg. I am guessing a BR and Marans mix.

have a friend that went to the last one and got 21 layers for 3.00eh. they are not laying yet but they are ready to start any day.

They are VERY EASY to grow, all I ever did was plant water once in a while and watch them go... lol

I've started this three times now let's see if I can get through it!

I don't know of any here on the west side. There's Kern, Kertly and Herr in Lebanon which is also where Indiana Organics is but I've never used them. There's also Timmons in Lebanon, they're in town. I use them for cattle feed and off and on for chicken feed. Their min mixed order is 250lbs. I *think* it worked out to about $13/ 50lb bag when I has them mix it. I just didn't like the way it fermented so I've gone back to premaid pelleted feed, which I've also gotten there for about $15/ 50lb bag

Well mother of the year strikes again! The three littles are up on the top roost in with the big kids. Nothing like throwing them in the deep end (only four weeks old!)! That roost is 4 ft tall, it will be a miracle if they don't get bumped off and broken in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately they were buried in hens and there was no way for me to pluck them off without panicking everyone and causing them to be knocked off. I do have to give my other girls some credit, they have been very good with the babies. However the morning will be interesting with them all piled up by the door. Hope the babies don't get trampled or pecked (if they survive the night on the roost).

Broody Marans has been installed in the broody breaker. Broody Silkie will be the next occupant. I forsee the breaker doing some brisk business for the forseeable future.
