INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So I got a few good shots of my golden laced polish roo Roadrunner last night.

I just love him. He is so pretty! I just hope he doesn't turn out mean like my older white crested black did. I had to get rid of him last week because I couldn't even feed him without getting attacked anymore.

I hated to get rid of him, but I just don't want real aggressive birds in my yard. Does anyone have any tips on how to tame down the aggression on some of these roosters. My favorite roo Rourke is becoming very aggressive too. He comes at me all the time, to the point that I put him in a pen, but even then when I would try to feed him he would come at me. Do I just need to show him who's boss (ME), or will he just always be like this? (P.S. he might still be mad at me for calling him LuLu for the first 16 weeks of his life,

until I realized he was a rooster.)

I'm trying to get his crest to stand up, it always wants to fall to one side, hence the ponytail.

So, the little things poking out of the back of the head are the streamers. That's how you can tell it's a boy? When do they start getting these? Man now I need to go check some of mine I'm not sure about.

Also I have a question for the silkie people!!! Can you breed out a straight comb? I have a splash silky with a straight comb, if I breed her to a walnut comb male what are the chances that I will get walnut combs, instead of straight. I'm very new to this stuff so any info will help a lot. Thanks

Oh by the way! I also love this color of silky!(partirdge) I am trying to get more color in my silky pen. I love the variety.

Vinegar weed killer update -- I don't have pics at the moment, but unfortunately, the weeds are coming back

. I need to spray again - don't know if multiple times will eventually do it or not. I know it works on the exposed part of the plant so I was hoping it I could kill enough of the foliage the weed would eventually die. I refuse to go the roundup route so I may just have these weeds forever! Ugh!!

I am not an expert by any means but I read somewhere on BYC to not handle them frequently when they are young. This will create fear of the unknown and they will be less likely to challenge you. I did this with my chicks once I knew which ones were boys, so far no aggression in any except one incident with Blizzard when he was 4 weeks old but I think he may have thought my hand was a predator because it happened at night. It may just be the breeds I have also. My Roos are Cochin and OEGB. Hope you can keep Roadrunner nice and friendly, he is a very good looking Boy!!!

if I remember correctly straight comb is a recessive gene. So if bred to walnut all chicks would be walnut but cqrry the straight comb gene. Imo, I would avoid breeding.

Some believe handling roos is good, but I believe a touch of wariness of humans is best and don't handle my boys any more than necessary.

In my opinion an aggressive roo will always be an aggressive roo and those genes should never be allowed to be passed on. There are too many nice roos that are always looking for homes. I can see one aggressive action as a fluke, but a roo that is repeatedly aggressive should be culled immediately. I also don't believe in rehoming an aggressive roo. In my opinion it is irresponsible to make that rooster someone else's problem, or take the chance of someone else breeding that aggressive trait into chicks.

Got some good ones of another of my new cochins. I'm not sure what color they would be considered, does anyone have any ideas? I think they are going to be large fowl also, because they are a lot bigger than the bantam chicks I got. Does anyone have any ideas on how to tell if they are bantam or not?

That's what I am afraid of, that he will just always be mean. I did handle him a bit when he was young( i thought he was a pullet) and even as he got a bit older he would sit in my lap, but now he just charges at me or comes up behind me and pecks me.

So i guess he will have to go to the rooster pen, (when we get it done), and become sunday dinner. I just don't know how I will manage that one, but I'm tired of getting charged at every time I go near him. He is also very I AM THE BOSS with all the other chickens, especially the other roos. All the other ones get along okay, but he won't let them hardley do anything. So I guess for the sake of all the others he will have to go.

Until then he will just have to be kept penned on his own.

Got some good ones of another of my new cochins. I'm not sure what color they would be considered, does anyone have any ideas? My little blue partridge silkie pullet is a little fella. I can usually tell sex of my own chicks, but he slipped by me. LOL I would have never known if those sneaky streamers hadn't started peeking out of the back of his head. He is soooo girly looking!

This is one girly looking dude. LOL I just had the same thing with a chick that hatched in May-all of a sudden she has streamers and is a he!

I have been scrolling through the pics. on here and i just have to say, Indiana chickens rock !!! have you guys noticed? they just seem to be a bit brighter, healthier, over all better looking chickens then others?? must be something in the air.

Thank you for the update, I also need to re-apply some in the cracks of our driveway. The weeds came back about a month after 1 treatment but not super bad this time.
