INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Had a great weekend despite all the humidity. Also our bees swarmed on Friday while I was working from home. One minute was working on my laptop, the next minute they were looking suspicious, and sure enough they swarmed a couple minutes later. They flew up into a tree, then at night, they all flew back and stayed on the outside of this hive. Who's ever heard of a swarm in August? Especially since we just added a brand new deep to the hive 2 weeks prior.

I have 2 broody chickens again. The one below has already hatched out and raised chicks once this summer. I took her out of the coop so she could cool down while I misted the chickens and she gave me a really funny look.

I saw this at Lowe's this weekend, it is an outdoor fan with a built-in mister. Thought it would be great for a chicken coop if it wasn't so pricey! Hoping that it goes down (we are at Lowe's every weekend it seems lately) and we can get it on clearance!

The chicks are getting larger, but still don't want to sit for pictures. Wish they would hold still long enough! Here they are with the opaline guinea in the middle. I am starting to think the silkies believe they are guineas and the guinea believes she's a head silkie. LOL

Thats interesting! Do they divide when they swarm, or is there another reason?
Anyone else feel like they're melting? Normally I wouldn't complain but it's been so nice so far it makes it 10 times worse

At least my chickens seem to be ok so far though. I'm really hoping it cools off like they're predicting so we can get all out Roos processed next Monday.

I went out a little while ago to settle in some girls I picked up from Sally (I'm supposed to be down sizing

) and momma hen has finally taken her chicks out of their box! They were SO cute running around on the floor of the coop!
I like the heat, but the humidity is horrible. Was finally a little cooler today.

Finally got a polish at the swap meet last weekend and this is what my wife does to him while I'm at work.

Bees have more drama than Game of Thrones novels if you can believe it. Workers decide which larvae they want to make into queens. There is no exact reason for a worker to start making queens. Sometimes a queen isnt as productive as she should be. Sometimes she isnt as pretty as she could be. Maybe the worker lost favor in the queen's court and is out for revenge. The workers feed the larvae royal jelly and take great care of her. When a new queen hatches, she immediately has to fight the existing queen. The loser either dies or flies off with half the hive of honey and bees. The winner stays in the hive and works to replenish the lost workers and honey. They have such a facinating society.

So, I have a feed question for all of the feed mill shoppers -

Where is your favorite mill, what do you get there, and what are some prices there?

I know, I don't ask for much. ;-) But, I've tried looking around on my own, and it's like they're all hiding.

Thanks!
Thats one of the biggest reasons I started this thread. Spent weeks trying to find one close

Just sold my Birchen Marans and legbars! It will be so much easier this winter and feed bill will be much less as well. I will miss them. Loved their personalities, especially the Marans.
Wow congrats Brad! I miss all the extra geese I sold, but sure cut my feed costs, and paid for my piglets.

Started nursing school yesterday so I have been very busy.

Just now trying to catch up on the thread. I did get a couple of pics of the newbies, but they are not the greatest. Will try to get some better ones this weekend. Also, my frizzles are still very small and have just started to get their feathers so it's not real prominent yet. I can't wait for them to get a bit bigger.

This is Jasper and Alice my bantam cochin pair

This is Joni and Chachi, I think they are partridge cochins. What color would you guys say? (Never mind Spike, he's a photo bomber)

This one is just a few days old. Can't wait to see what color it will turn out to be. (I am really wanting a lavender cochin)

Group photo ( the bigger black and white one is the frizzle) the lady I got her from said it was spotted. Does anyone know what that might turn out to be?

Well those are some of my newest babies. Will try to get better photos later.
Precious!

I'm starting to think there's something special behind this cinder block... Some kind of magic portal for chickens or something.

Poor Jubey, everyone, even the 2 month old Cochins, is giving him a hard time!

Well mother of the year strikes again! The three littles are up on the top roost in with the big kids. Nothing like throwing them in the deep end (only four weeks old!)! That roost is 4 ft tall, it will be a miracle if they don't get bumped off and broken in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately they were buried in hens and there was no way for me to pluck them off without panicking everyone and causing them to be knocked off. I do have to give my other girls some credit, they have been very good with the babies. However the morning will be interesting with them all piled up by the door. Hope the babies don't get trampled or pecked (if they survive the night on the roost).

Broody Marans has been installed in the broody breaker. Broody Silkie will be the next occupant. I forsee the breaker doing some brisk business for the forseeable future.
Bunny is still mothering, they leave her a lot now tho.

Hey, all, thought I'd check in and let y'all know what's going on in my neck of the woods. School started for me on Monday and it's been nothing short of crappy since then.

Mainly, I wanted to reply to anyone wondering about my little ducky, Wibbles. It's with a heavy heart that I must report she passed away while I was at class yesterday. She had become increasingly weak over the week and I... really wasn't surprised to find that she had given up the fight. She was not well by yesterday. :( She was such a precious baby, and I miss her so much. She gave me so many smiles in her short life, popping out from under the EcoGlow to look up at me, falling asleep with her little wing in my hand, nibbling at my fingers, splashing in her little tub... She was only 12 days old, but it felt like I had known her for so much longer.

Other than that (and school stress), all is well with me and my birds. The girls always help me through my worst times. As far as my future with waterfowl, we're planning on building a duck coop this fall and looking for a pair or trio of Calls for sale at the Lebanon show in October. (Anyone else going? I know that's a ways away, but I'm just wondering.) I don't think I'll try shipped eggs again (since that went so well last time). Maybe a more hardy breed if I do try hatching again.

Anyway, I have a four day weekend now, so I'll probably be more active the next few days. I'm not gonna bother to go back and reread everything, so sorry if I missed anything directed at me.

So sorry for your loss. I feel like I knew Wibble too, through your great posts and pics. She will be missed':hugs

Hiya peeps! I've been really busy lately. Sold a few doves and am still looking for a RV/trailer. I lost one of my silver laced wyadottes. Other than that not much happening.

So sorry about your wyandotte. Awesome news on the doves!
Today we finally can keep our eggs. And my girls did good got 21. My goal is for two dozen per day so I'm almost there!!

Bet you will be frying eggs up!
Last night/this morning an extremely annoying cricket woke me up. Please be quite tonight lol!

Bumblefoot
My Jubilee, Adeline, has bumblefoot. I've noticed her limping for several days, but didn't see anything on her feet, and figured she just slightly injured it. Today it seemed worse, and I could see the telltale scab. I'm going to call my veterinarian tomorrow to see if he can take care of it. I don't mind performing surgery at all, and even watched a video of it while I ate dinner tonight-lol-, but I don't have a punch-it-out thingy. My oldest brother is a surgeon, but unfortunately he lives in Minnesota. Where are relatives when you need them! My main concern is pain, so I'd feel better if she could receive pain meds prior to surgery. When I researched Bumblefoot, I kept seeing the words, "Pain" and "Death from infection" repeated, so now I'm sure she'll die a painful death overnight.

Oh no! Hope she recovers quickly.

Quote: Hope it doesn't, usually my flock will snatch a bee if its anywhere nearby. My scovies jump up to catch them, its too funny.
