Just FYI : I do not think Dinky's in Montgomery is having their weekly auction tonight.

They have a huge horse sell going on this weekend! I was planning on going and a friend told me they announced NO AUCTION Sept. 26. I would hate for anyone to go all the way there for nothing.

On another note, since I can't go to Dinky's tonight, is the Sandcut trader's fair in Terre Haute worth going to. I am looking for a few more silkie hens and Terre HAute is a 2.5 hour drive for me.
Thanks

Found last night! Not sure who laid them. I am guessing my BR and EE bc I think silkie eggs are supposed to be white, aren't they? Delicious for breakfast!

Haven't finished their nest boxes yet, hope to this weekend. With the exception of nailing down the roof on the run, we are otherwise DONE (for now) with the coop. My raised beds aren't working out. Dogs are trampling my herbs. Maybe next year.

Thanks, I was planning a 1.5 hr drive to go tonight.

I'm glad I saw this!!!

nice pics. thank you for sharing ! your camera does a great job
Aw, thanks! :D That camera is definitely one of my favorite birthday presents! Although, I've had it for years now and I'm pretty sure I've not yet figured out how to use it to its full potential.
So I decided to count my chickens today. :D Large fowl 12 EE's (several colors lol) 6 Cochins (3 black 2 blue 1 splash) 4 Wheaton Marans 1 Australorp 2 Silver laced Wyandottes 1 Minorca 2 Rhode Island Reds 2 SLW/ EE 's 1 Leghorn/ Australorp 1 EE/ Australorp 1 RIR/ SLW 1 Minorca/ SLW 34 :/ + Bantam 22 silkies (3 black, 7 white, 4 blue, 1 splash, 6 partridge, 1 porcelain) 3 cochin (1 black 1 barred 1 gold laced) 3 oegb 2 polish 1 EE 31:th + Ducks 3 Khaki Campbell = 68  Holy Crap I shouldn't have done that :barnie Ignorance is bliss. :p Nobody do that. :old
:lau Oh, gosh, ignorance is bliss! I'm a bit OCD about counting my girls every night to be sure they're all in, so there's no way I could possibly forget I have 34 of them, and 7 pullets, and a rooster--and absolutely no room for any more chickens. :(
There was some good news in our newspaper (The Goshen News) today. On the front page there was an article about the fall winter forecast. Here is a quote from the article: "According to Evan Bentley, a meterologist with the North Webster (Northern Indiana) office of the National Weather Service, current indicators appear to be pointing toward above average temperatures for both the fall and winter months. 'It looks like for fall, right now we're looking at better than normal chances of being above normal when it comes to temperatures,' Bentley said from his office Wednesday afternoon. 'And we're seeing the same thing for the winter time frame. If it's leaning any particular way, it's leaning toward above normal levels.'.....For this winter, it looks like we might actually be leaning toward below normal precipitation......'Right now we really aren't anticipating anything like what we had last winter. We know there are some rumors and stories out there right now about it being another bad one this winter, but that's really not supported by anything we're seeing here." There's more to the article explaining a bit about how they go about with predictions. I'm sure hoping Evan Bentley is right!!! :fl :ya
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let this be true!! :fl
Pleeeeeease let him be right. I will send him a personal thanks and tell him I adore him :bow I haven't got my farmer almanac yet but keep hearing its projected to be worse. Did I mention, I hate snow, and I hate cold more? if not, HEY I HATE SNOW AND COLD :barnie My birds don't like it much either. I am working towards breeds that are more cold hardy... except my scovies. I will do whats necessary for them to be comfortable this winter. I really dread anything below -0- because my bantams don't do well with it either. My geese ignore it and wait for the puddles in January lol! Goodnite everyone ZZZzzzzZZZ
 I can deal with cold, it's the snow I hate!! So... much... shoveling... :th

Reposting this here...thanks to @lalaland for posting in the Natural Chicken Keeping thread
http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/live-poultry-05-14/index.html"] Hey, just a heads up in case any of you deal with Mt Healthy hatchery in Ohio - big CDC warning yesterday on people getting sick with salmonella from backyard flocks of chickens sourced from that hatchery. http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/live-poultry-05-14/index.html
It's funny, I was just mentioning this to someone over PM. Mt. Healthy definitely will not get any of my business. This is apparently not the first time they have had issues with Salmonella. :sick No, thank you!

Thank you!

I'm sure I can find some recent ones...

Here is a short video of Farrah (silkie) and Amy (BR) trying to occupy the same spot in the dust bath: http://instagram.com/p/tVnla0MPMe/

Looks like I have mostly taken vids lately!

Lynda (silkie) and Amy with the guineas. The guineas, the silkies, and my BR keep themselves in one flock. The EEs keep together away from them. http://instagram.com/p/svEWnFsPOd/

Otis, the EE rooster before his tail feathers got pulled out (I think by the guineas): http://instagram.com/p/rnKCUIsPCz/

I guess I don't have a super recent pic of Gayle, except for the one on top of the swingset: http://instagram.com/p/spYlxwMPDZ/?modal=true

I don't even wanna know here. I have 15 geese. 5 mature guinea, 57 quail. the rest I haven't tried to count yet.
My GLW will be leaving this weekend. My good friend @jsummers son wants to breed and show for 4H and he has chosen the GLW. My silkie flock will also leave next week. @chickrookie has agreed to adopt them and am very excited that she will have her hens, finally! I am taking a hard look at my breeds, species before winter gets here. Still looking at my pekin,, Silver Appleyard is a very appealing breed, and autosexing breed too. I know of a very reputable breeder in KY that keeps outstanding flocks. The pekin are a fast grower and fantastic egg producer, but I feel the need to raise heritage birds. Its a hard choice. May have to do both!

I cant stand the cold either, and neither can my kiddo's, well except the LGD's they love it!!!

This is funny. I started with 8 pullets in March of this year and now I have 32.

. I guess chicken math got a hold of me.

I love this prediction. I hope it is right, last WInter was terrible in TN, my kids were out of school for an entire month. The goats were miserable and three kidded in freezing temps. Needless to say I had goats in the house. Temps here were up and down all winter causing my goats to be miserable. I did not have chickens so this will be a whole new experience with them.

A couple of our cute kids that were born last Winter. Enjoying some of our warmer days.

I started with the intent to just replace my old flock, butt......... lol
are those Nigerian Dwarfs? They are so darn cute...

I will one day have more land to allow us to have larger livestock and goats will be one of them! I'm always so envious when I folks posting about theirs! I had a Blue Pygmy goat when I was very young. My parents were very young parents and we did live in town in a very small town and he was our "dog". He grew and would butt me off of my swing set every time! Then we got a puppy and our goat kept trying to kill him so my parents got rid of him. I was too young for it to leave a bad taste in my mouth about goats. ..so one day we will have some. My goal is to raise cattle for meat and dairy goats with a few little breeds, maybe some pigs for meat too but that I'm not as familiar with so that's just a possibility.
lol I have goats, horses and chickens and want more land for cattle and ducks and maybe even some Peafowl, and NO neighbors!!!
