How can everyone on this thread not want a goat after seeing this pictures?? Going to be impossible. LOL

good morning.

I'm on Indy's west side, a 22 acre organic operation of hay, soybeans, popcorn and sometimes other things like spelt, sunflowers, sweet corn, etc. We're also a certified bee farm and honey producer.

We have about three dozen layers (about 5 of them are roos), ending our second summer. We started with a mix of RIR and barred rock, but our original rooster got so aggressive that he harmed people who can to help or work on the farm. So he went thru a succession of names. Originally named Rudy, it was changed to Randy (because he was) when he matured. His name was changed to Satan when he started hurting people, and finally, he became known as Crock Pot. He was my second kill, the first being a black sex link hen who started breaking eggs.

This spring we added all buff orpington, in hopes of gentler roos.

And we have three white turkeys maturing for a fall harvest. Four Muscovy ducks (2 drakes) and 2 ducklings

All fed certified organic feed.

I will only have LF cochins for flock roosters now. They are awesome. I will be breeding and selling eggs from my large fowl cochins in the spring for those interested. Pip'd I may have some silkie boys if you want bantam roos. You are welcome tocome see tne birds. We do live in the same county.

I love my silkies and cochins. My oegbs are also the sweetest little things. My paint eggs are here and henley is sitting like a pro. Eta 10/23

So who all else raises coturnix quail? I am considering closing down my stock til spring. I am asking now in case I do, so I have someone to pester about eggs around march or so

That being said, I am also offering birds before we process them. I have 5 week olds and about 16 adults.

X2... I am cutting some breeds out already. My GLW left tonight, hardest ever to see go they were my first layers. Trevor was very excited to take them home, and start his breeding project for 4H next year. Red, my oldest rooster, Betsy and Spike will be missed here. They will be 3 next year, so not a good age for a farm. Fantastic age for a 4H project and an energetic young man!

Aw, that's got to be tough. They went to a good home, at least.

There's a lot of people talking about their great love for cochins. What makes them so loveable? Never had one, so I honestly don't know. The feathered legs give me pause. I imagine the leg feathers would get all torn-up & caked with mud. Does that happen & if so, how bad does it get? Do other hens try to peck at the leg feathers?

Well, I should start by saying I have never had a Cochin hen before. All of my experience was with Po, my bantam Cochin rooster. I decided last year that I wanted to try a rooster in my flock again. It had been about 5 years since I had a rooster in my main flock, but I free-range and like to know there's someone out there keeping an eye on the girl. I wanted a calm rooster that could be trusted around my young niece and nephew. I also wanted a bantam because I have bantam hens. I had heard good things about Cochin roosters, so decided to go with one of them. I liked that he was super gentle and calm. He would get stirred if he felt cornered, but never acted out against humans, never showed a bit of human aggression at all. He was also very good with the girls, only went through a short hormonal phase unlike most of the other roosters I've owned. That's what I like in a rooster. I ended up losing him because I wanted a few of the hens to regrow some feathers he was treading off (he had 30-35 hens, but only a few of them would let him mount them, so they were getting worn out) and, unfortunately, one night I forgot to close him in his pen. :/ Po never had problems with his feathers. His pen got muddy when he was separated for a short while, but once I moved him out of the mud, he cleaned up very well on his own and didn't have any tattered or caked feathers as a result. No one pecked his feet feathers, no problems with that. He was always nice and round and fluffy.

My DS's GF helped hold my five Bantam Black Cochin Chicks so I could try getting a few decent photos. Well, I wasn't able to get a good photo of the oldest chick or one of the middle ones. I'm hoping that ellymayRans who supplied the eggs can tell me if there are any frizzles. At this point, I'm thinking that if there is a female frizzle or if not, a female, I will keep one and find homes for the others. After I happened to notice that she was on a second break, I put her back on her nest, but she acted like she had no recollection of seeing those eggs before! I couldn't believe it. I've felt terrible knowing that she sat on them for 13 days!![/COLOR] [COLOR=8B4513]There wasn't anything I could do because I don't have an incubator and I didn't know how long she had been off the nest. It's so sad. I guess I will buy a basic incubator in case this happens again. I googled info and found that abandoning eggs is certainly not uncommon. It's just so weird that they can suddenly flip a switch and act totally different. [/COLOR]

I love the youngest! What a cutie! Do you think maybe she gave up on the eggs because she could sense they weren't developing, or did you candle to check? Some girls just aren't meant to be mamas. It's a good idea to get an incubator just in case--as long as you're ready to take care of the babies if that happens!

@pipdzipdnreadytogo I know i have atleast 2 modern bantam cockerels available if you want to take a leap into the ugly breeds! I should have some bantam cochins in spring if not sooner.

I think I may have misspoken, y'all -- I meant if I were going to get a rooster, I'd want a bantam, not that I'm actively looking for a rooster. At the moment, my quarantine space is reserved for ducks if I find any at the Lebanon show. I may take one or two of ya up next spring, though! It all depends on how the winter goes and if I have any extra space by then.
