INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Posting this just for a handy reference.

Disclaimer: for most small flocks that get out on "healthy" ground (not impacted, muddy ground), aren't raised in overcrowded housing, have fresh water, ARE NOT ROUTINELY GIVEN ANTIBIOTICS, etc. you are very unlikely to have one of these. Most of what's on the list are diseases of CAFO type situations in which the birds are overcrowded and fed antibiotics to encourage growth and prevent the diseases of overcrowding.

So, with that said:

Thanks for this. I made sure to bookmark it for a future reference.

I'm hoping someone has some tips for me - why would a hen who's been using the nest boxes to lay for several months, suddenly start laying her eggs under the roost? Our roost is a large section of a pine tree with all of its branches. We have six nest boxes for 12 hens. My daughter thought one of the boxes needed more bedding so I took care of that this evening. Nothing else has been different than the "normal" for the past several months. The last two eggs have been on the floor of the coop under the roost. I am anxious to hear any ideas or suggestions on how to get her back to the nest boxes.

I dont have LF cochin but with the size and fluff, I would think she could. My little 4 pound muscovy hen raised 12 duckling with no problems.
I believe my chickens have come down with something. I've noticed several with a sneeze/cough, accompanied by their equivalent of a runny nose. Last night I noticed one of my cornish hens has one eye covered with a nasty crusty something or other. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I'm thinking of trying an antibiotic, but not sure which one to try. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I had this issue before too. The drops in the eye do the trick very well. It seems like when they start taking crops it, it sparks the problem in more sensitive birds.
Quote: No rattling or clicking. Didn't think to check for a smell. I'll do that tonight. Bedding is pine shavings, and it doesn't get wet in the barn at all. They also free range all day, so they are all over everything wet and dry. Out of ~100 birds, I've probably noticed 4-6 birds sneezing, and it seems to be mostly the 4 cornish that all hang out together all day. I have two roos sneezing/coughing too. There may be others since I heard a few other sneezes that I couldn't attribute to any particular bird. None of the turkeys seem to be having any issues at all. Want to nip this in the bud if it is an issue.

We have contacts at Elanco, and just talked to one of their vets. They see some pretty nasty respiratory stuff in the commercial flocks they look at. He was told that for a backyard flock with these symptoms, the best thing they can recommend Tylan. (transparency note - Made by Elanco....) It is a 3-5 day treatment and only a 1 day withdrawal wait on eggs afterward. The vet said it won't cause problems with any healthy birds, and such a short treatment will not cause antibiotic resistance.

I'm going to try this. I'll report back in a week and let everyone know how it is going.......wish me luck.

Are you injecting, or giving orally? Dying to hear the results. I have read about it and baytril on the turkey threads before.
I use Tylan 50 orally at .25 ml/cc for 5 days for my hen. Hers resembles MG but its actually a sensitivity to dust and cold. Use caution with tylan,as it can cause yeast issues. I started using selsu blue on her and that cleared it up. It was just dermal. Favus caused by the antibiotics She did have 3 bouts of her respiratory issue in a year so she got a little overloaded with meds. All of that being said, a lot of my chickens are sneezing right now , I think due to theseason and all the dust from the major molting situation we have right now. I would completely clean everything out if you can and put new bedding down. Acv and poultry drench in water and vet rx on nostrils under wings and on wattles for a few days. If stool look normal andthey are acticg okay its probably just irritaion, like allergies lol. I swear they can get allergies..... hence my lily. Tylan is all that clears her up though so hers has to bacterial, but the rest of my sneezers I think have allergies.
Do you know what the weight to ml dosage is for oral administration? I want to make note of the info also.

[COLOR=900000]Well, I'm exhausted! We've finished up the siding and got the doors and roof onto the duck coop. I also got the first coat of paint on the doors and the second coat on the outside walls. Other than spilling half a can of paint and struggling to get the human door on just so, it all went together pretty well! I'm not even going to think about how much paint is on my hands and face (and clothes and hair and, well, you get the idea). It's looking more and more like a coop!

No pictures again, it was too dark by the time I was done painting.

Its looking great pipd!!!
Good points that it may just be a dust issue, or even with the changing weather, things in the air like different pollens, etc.

I reserve an antibiotic for EMERGENCY use only as antibiotic resistance isn't something to take lightly. When an antibiotic is given it will be in your litter and the ground in your runs, etc. from droppings. So it doesn't just effect one bird; it effects the environment that they are all in by encouraging antibiotic resistant bacteria in your animal environment.

Then there is the issue that Kab discussed - getting gut flora (where the immune system gains much of it's strength) out of balance which puts the animal at greater risk of not being able to resist other issues when it becomes over populated with yeasts that weaken the animal even more. It's like a vicious circle.

I highly recommend Avi-Culture II avian probiotics that can be added to feed either occasionally or to rebuild after an antibiotic. It is the ONLY avian probiotic on the market that is NOT GROWN ON A GMO SUBSTRATE. They often claim 'GMO FREE' but they are not taking into account the SUBSTRATE on which the bacteria is grown when they state that. When asked directly, there is no manufacturer of probiotics that would state that the substrate was not GMO. Except for AVI culture. When it's a gmo substrate, glyphosate or other herbicides/pesticides contaminate the product and change the biology of the items grown on them.

Anyhow... I don't sell Avi-Culture II....but I could if I thought I'd have enough customers. Anyhow, I recommend it based on it's sound manufacture and the fact that it is made for avian use.

You can tell them where you heard about it. He appreciates knowing that I recommend them. http://www.avi-culture.com/shop.html

And...the website is pretty bad :)P) But the product is good. The small container lasts a long time depending on the number of birds you have.
Sound great, lot of good info. Will definitely look into it, I wondered if there was a direct probotic other than the tiny packets at TSC.

hmmmmm sounds like someone is planning to go broody! taking the eggs is the best bet. possibly blocking that area off somehow may also work. Good luck!

Anyone else see feathered wet rats running around their yards today? It rained all day...still raining....and my girls and boys are out enjoying themselves. I went out and checked food and eggs and went right back in. The crazy birds were out in the wetness all day!

The dogs went and played in the creek and the ran somewhere and came back FILTHY. They stunk so bad that I had to put them both in the bath right away. And all I wanted to do was lay around and relax. So much for that!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Well, I am excited! I had a turkey poult hatch today! Waiting to see if the other egg hatches too. She has not laid in a week, so she may be done. if so, bator turns off in 3 weeks....
Busy weekend planned. Looks like we will work on the barn some, cant wait to get started on it!

Silkie Chickens:
I've been seeing a lot of pretty, fluffy birds here lately. Do they honestly look like that? Don't they get "dirty" or did you just finish fixing them up for the photo? I'm serious b/c I have no experience with them. We only have the common clean-legged, standard sized chickens.
