We are putting our breeders in the pole barn.  Or at least that is the plan.  We still need to finish cleaning it out. Quite a task as my DH saves everything.

For example our pool came with a funny shower tent that looked like the beach tents of olden days.  But it is too windy here to use it.  He has had that tent in a box for over 7 years.  It is free to a good home, if anyone wants it.  It hooks up to a hose so no hot water after you get out of the pool.  And it is a TENT not a sturdy place for a shower.

That would be perfect for a camp shower!!! No hot water, no prob your not supposed t have ALL the creature comforts when you're camping!

We are for sure planning to go to the Lebanon show

. I have sworn myself to not buy birds. (note to self, do not bring cages!) Chicken breeds, my most wanted breed is still the coronation sussex. It would be very hard for me to pass them up!
I am still thinking hard about pheasant, but I would go with ringnecks... Its just the thought of a permit, another coop. But they are really interesting. I do want to look at them more if they are there. Maybe just bring one cage, hehehe

If I found the white or melanistic hybrid, I would probably bring some home. They are just beautiful birds.
So, what time is good to go? This will be my very first time to attend a show, ever. And will be wearing my shirt! DH has about worn his out, he likes it.

HOG PROCESSING a handful of us have talked back and forth regarding my hog processing date. DH and I are planning tentatively Saturday, the 25th of October. This hinges largely on my clearing of the pole barn. Dad recently informed me he will not need use of it anymore. So, jobs like this can now be done indoors on concrete floor out of the weather! If not, it will be the following Saturday the 1st of November. If you are interested in attending, PM me and I will include all info in a pm once the date is final. Family events prevented us from our regular yearly processing and this is one big pig! He is estimated at about 450 pounds, about 100 pounds over what I normally aim for. I will show how we start to finish "say goodbye" to our hog, to basic packaging. Will be a long day, you can be here for it all, or just parts. Will be a nice warm fire & pitch in as well.

WisH I Could Be there! I'm sure I'd learn a lot!!

One last post! We are always looking for "contributors" to help us keep up to date on our thread. Contributors are the backbone of our thread, and have helped us save important posts and links all in one handy reference page. They help us coordinate events. We also keep a member page article you can see here:
My deepest gratitude to @atrueb00 for all the hard work that's went into the member page, and our weekly event updates!

On this page, there is our member list designed by @bradselig . This tells you who owns what breeds of chicken, as well as other poultry, waterfowl, exotics and livestock. Very nice sorting feature allows you to search by breed, location etc. Also lists who breeds, sells chicks and hatching eggs.
There is a google map created by @CluckAcres to add your general location.
We also have a Facebook page, started by @kabhyper1 you can see here:

If you are proficient in google doc's (Microsoft Excel) and have some spare time to donate, we need you! Please send a PM to @Mother2Hens @bradselig or myself if you would like to volunteer.
I personally am grateful to every contributor who has had some time to spare helping us grow. Some move on, have more important commitments arise, and that's part of normal life. Each little part they have given us has made us a strong, friendly group of folks that just want to help each other out and learn

LOL timing! It's contagious I tell ya! I cannot break Snow (the white) from brooding ever. She would try to hatch ice cubes on a bed of nails.

Funny saying!

@pipdzipdnreadytogo ~ Rosie is a doll! I'd keep her as a house chicken. haha

I'm curious, which meat grinder do you use? You grind enough meat that I'm sure you have a good grinder.
@racinchickins I'm going to ask you too. What grinder do you use?

Do you both like your grinders or is there a different one out there I should look into getting?
We used our Kitchenaid grinder attachment. We did one turkey and one chicken. It worked quite well, but we don't think it is our solution long term. It is fine for the occasional small piece (we grind our own hamburgers just before we cook them - best burgers we've made yet). But for large amounts of grinding, I think it would be too tough on the mixer. And we use our mixer for EVERYTHING, so losing it would be bad.

I've been eyeing the grinders in the Cabelas catalog. I think I see one in our future, since we've decided to get a pig or two next year. I'm going up to help @jchny2000 process their pig. I need a refresher. Haven't done that since I was 14 or 15.

So it is day 14 on my first fall incubation and I only had to throw out 3 clear eggs. I still have all 6 silkie eggs in and 4 white leghorns and 5 SLW. I was almost dreading the candling this morning because we have had 2 power outages because of recent storms for a total of at least 8 hours the bators were off.

I was so happy to see that most of the eggs still look real good. I even saw a little beak in a few of them and some movement, so I am hoping these power outages haven't ruined them all. Guess I will have to get my hatcher ready for lock down on Saturday and maybe some new babies this time next week.

I'm excited to see what hatches from my silkie eggs, because I had my white hen with a black rooster for the first time. It'll almost be like Christmas morning seeing whats in the packages.

Hope everyone has a great, all be it soggy, day!!!!
