It really is not the best time of the year for hatching, but you might be able to get a few CCL eggs from different people to hatch yourself. I'd offer to hatch you some but I'm only getting about 5-8 eggs a week from my CCL. Given a week to collect eggs and 21 more days to set them, it would be mid December before any chicks hatched and no promises of any females.

That's OK. I appreciate the willingness to help. I couldn't do eggs or chicks anyway, even in the spring. due to my extremely limited space. That's why I have to wait to find older birds that are known to be hens

So, for people who want rare breeds, do they almost always have to order eggs or chicks from far away and raise them themselves, and then try to sell off the extras? That seems like quite a gamble, and you would need space for them until they sold, if you could even sell them. I would like an Appenzeller Spitzhauben someday, but I don't see any way of getting just one. Being new to chickens, I am discovering all sorts of breeds for my wish list, but apparently only the common ones are easy to find.
There is a member on here @pbirdhaven I believe, that raises Appenzellers. You could try sending her a pm.

Ugh! Frozen water this morning. The large water just had ice covering the top and once I showed the girls it could be poked they went crazy poking through the ice with their beaks. The smaller water was too frozen so I had to bring it in and put fresh in. I guess it's time to start bringing the water in at night. I am so not ready to start this already. Let's just hope it is not as bad as last year. Next summer our first goal is to put electricity in the coop. Our electricity is really, really old. We still have a fuse box. But, power company is coming in the next couple weeks to update us and we will be switched to circuit breakers. So, hopefully we will have the ability to add power to the outbuildings.

I've got power in the coop, and still haven't decided whether to try to heat a waterer. I'm out there twice a day anyway, opening and closing. Carrying water isn't that much more work for me, so I'll probably skip the heat.

I have, however, decided to eat one of my hens this week. I'm excited about trying the vein/artery slitting method. I think it will be a lot easier than what I have done previously.

If you have ever looked at an Ameraucana or Araucana egg color chart you will see a few shades of green. Ameraucanas specifically are a newer breed and they aren't always the bluest . It is just better to know go you are buying from
My point exactly! A lot of people think that if you want blue eggs, just buy certain breeds. Not ALL of the hen of blue breed egg layers lay blue eggs. And yes, i have looked at the egg color charts.........

. And if you need to rant

or just blow off steam about a bad day that's ok too. We keep a member list, and who breeds chickens and other poultry/waterfowl and livestock. PM @bradselig @Mother2Hens or me, @jchny2000 if you would like to be added to the list. You do not have to live in Indiana to be a part of our group either, we have members from a few other states as well.

Going to try to get some pictures tomorrow myself, some of the birds are done molting/growing up and are just beautiful. @kabhyper1 my lil Cricket and Gus Jr are just gorgeous, and that lil cochin mix is bigger every time I see him. Gus avoids me, but Jules is usually close by lol. She is still molting, but a pretty girl and very dominant in the flock.
My piglets are becoming pigs, loving my fat lil boar! just a doll, hope he stays this social. Still haven't named him, he is big, chubby, friendly, loves big belly rubs and back rubs, solid black with one white foot. Our barrow is of course, named Bacon. Haven't named the gilts yet either, but the bluebutt is probably going to be named Tiny. She is still the smallest, calmest lil girl ever.
My York gilt is still a timid girl, but almost as big as as the boars. very long body on her. Giving her extra treats like quail eggs and an occasional stale doughnut.
Will be putting my buck, Bocephus in with his girls December 1st to have kidding late April. Really adore the baby goats

I plan to keep a doe this year and expand the herd.
Posting again about the little potbellied pig DD has. She is working way too many hours, and lil Marla is too sweet to just be a pig in a pen, she needs a good home. PM me if interested. Marla has not been spayed, she is about 10 months old, estimated weight is around 40 pounds, white with blue patches. DD is not asking anything for her, just wants to find a good home and an owner that has time for her.
Awww I can't wait to see pics. I miss Gus and Jules. I was just thinking about them the other day. I miss his silly crow. :)

Hello everyone! I was voted in as my counties 4h poultry superintendent! Very excited! I only have experience with chickens, exhibition ones to be exact, i think i have help from a parent for commercial classes, yet I'm seeking out pigeon experts, and anyone who would want to come speak at a workshop! I'm in northern Indiana, Starke, our project is suffering badly, that is why i was chose to help it turn around! Education is a big deal to me! The more they know the more likely they are to get involved! Any breeders? Judges? Exhibitors? We cover, ducks, turkeys, geese, chickens, and pigeons. Please pm me! Thanks so much! !

I want to be a pirate when I grow up.

Except I don't want to make anyone walk the plank. Drowning isn't cool.

And I'd have a chicken instead of a parrot, obviously.

And I wouldn't want to steal from anyone unless I was really really hungry. Or I ran out of rum.

I would definitely drink a lot of rum and go on people's ships without being invited. People would let me, because I'd have a sword.

I'd probably feel bad for taking people's food and rum, so I'd cook for them before I left. And maybe swab their deck. But I'd still point my sword at them. I'd swab menacingly.

People wouldn't fear me, they'd pity me and tolerate me and feed me and give me rum. Because I make awesome curry.

I guess I'd be less like a pirate, and more like the village idiot of the Caribbean.

I want to be an idiot when I grow up. I feel I must be half way there.

I have a friend who got just one. I should ask her who she got it from. I know she doesn't buy chicks online, so it had to have been someone in Southern IN or Kentucky.

Maybe more than half. ;)

What would you do when they pointed swords back at you?

One must really plan for anything when taking up a career such as high seas piracy.
