INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Pigs sound like fun. Too bad our village is very anti-pig & anti-goat.

I know about the pigs because a woman moved here from Chicago & owned a pet pot-bellied pig. She rented a house with a nice yard thinking the extra space in the suburbs would make them happy. She was basically threatened by the village to get rid of her loyal pet or go to jail. It was in several papers. She gave up & moved.

Thats really sad! I admit believed the same until I really started to look at pigs for us. I have an adult potbelly here, Marla. She is about 40 lbs, and actually very personable as a pet. She plays fetch, and is very affectionate. My livestock hogs are just as friendly, and every one of them act like a pet too. Goats, they are like a dog, loyal, loving and very friendly, my Sugar (Oberhasli doe) will free range and stays with me all day. Adult bucks only will have musty odors during breeding season. If properly fed and cared for, both species, goats or pigs don't smell aside from a buck in rut. I call that ignorance on the village's end for sure, a little research is well worth harmony in a community

LOL! I call all my feeder pigs Bacon, makes it easier! They are seriously easy to raise. If you hunt, its about like processing a deer when its time to put one in the freezer. If they are well fed, they don't harm chickens, turkeys etc either. This is our first Bacon a few years back with his favorite buddy.
that is such a cool picture

I want to take a moment to say WELCOME

Its ok to talk about more than chickens! We all post lots of life events, discuss other poultry, waterfowl and livestock. You don't have to live in Indiana to be here either, I don't care where you live, just jump in and have fun. We don't mind pictures at all! feel free to share. Have a bad day and want to

that's ok too. We have a network of fantastic folks I consider good friends. You guys are awesome. Its ok to agree to "disagree" on a topic, but remember we need to respect other folks thoughts too. What works for them may not work for you.

I'm trying to get back in the thread, but for the first time in many years, I am really sick with a sinus infection, fever, sore throat, and ear infections. I went to the doctor today after my DH returned home from his third round of surgery for a melanoma on his forehead (they're hoping they got all of it). When it rains, it pours (literally and figuratively!) My chickens are doing well although they are sick of rain, rain, rain.

I hope you get over that sinus infection and feel better soon! Also will pray for the best in your dh situation. I too am growing weary of rain. It probably will help my apple trees i just planted this past summer get established.

@hoosiercheetah You crack me up sometimes...lol ..shaming the chickens into laying? I'm putting that one on the shelf for future reference

@wheezy50 . I can't tell whether hens or roos but at least one of those birds reminds me of that boxing promoter from the 70's ..he he

That whizz bang gun video was interesting, although for all the noise it makes you may as well get the twelve gauge out and just pull the trigger once then clean up the feathers... pesky hawks... we have one hanging out here too... got a few of my cardinals at the feeder here lately.

I'd say 20/turkey would be a good amount
It takes around 100 lbs of food to get a turkey from egg to table (or adulthood if they are pets). That's probably close to twice what it takes for a chicken.
If they have a proper amount of room, I wouldn't think they would have a problem. I just penned mine up, and I'm going to leave them in for a week to get used to going in there at night.
All turkeys are the same breed, just different color varieties and some size differences (except for BBB and BBW). I've raised a bunch of different varieties, and they've all been curious and relatively calm. Turkeys are definitely much easier to herd into their pens, they don't tend to panic run like chickens. I recently walked a tom up and down the indianapolis motor speedway front stretch. He didn't panic until we had to physically catch him to put him back in truck.
