INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Elly,
Good news all around! We have two red-tailed hawks that live 1/4 mile down the road plus a couple young bald eagles that fly over every couple days! Good reasons I don't let my girls free range!

I love that we have Bald Eagles that have nested here which I have never seen them stalking the chickens but red tails have been our biggest daytime predator. Fox early morning and coon/possum when they've been locked up past dark. Then the stray dogs but my neighbor has experienced that more than I.

Well, I gave in to temptation today and purchased some German Bielefelder chicks. Three hens for $15 each and two free roosters. They are all settled into the brooder.
The lady raises 7 different breed of chickens and ships chicks all over the country. She has a first class set-up for sure. All breeds penned separate, plus they breed English Bulldogs. They had 20 in their kennel.
She was headed to the post office to ship chicks to Alabama this afternoon. I'll get some pics tomorrow.
Congrats, sounds exciting!

Quote: Yikes! Glad your patrol ran it off!
I realized 2 more of my pullets started laying today, found a nice little pile of blue pullet eggs hidden under the nest boxes!

Quote: What a good boy, give that fella an extra snuggle.

Thank you, everyone. Its great to know we have more folks willing to help! I will wait until after the holidays, and get everyone set up. We mainly need people able to work in spreadsheets. Its shared on google docs, and contributors have access rights to be able to add, and update members information. I try to keep a handful of active contributors all the time, so if one of us ever leaves the thread, it can still be kept up. All the previous Indiana threads died when the OP left BYC.

Is it my imagination, or was it light just a little bit earlier today? (or maybe it's just that the boy and I were running a little behind schedule and making our trek to town for work and school a little later than normal, lol)

Here is what Indiana BYC'ers is all about and special thanks to @atrueb00 and @Mother2Hens working to create the article.

Awesome -- great work!!

2 more days til winter solstice & then slowly, but surely -- almost hard to believe that it's time already for the days to start lengthening! Hopefully the winter will seem shorter & not drag on this year since we've had such a mild December compared to last year.

We have a new layer!

I think it's either my Coronation Sussex

or
My Lavender Orpington.

Both have very red combs. My Orp is a few days shy of 8 months. The CS is 5 months. (We have another 8 mo-old black Orp, but her comb is not as developed.) May the detective work begin!

Because I only have 3 chickens laying, adding a 4th one is a big deal. It's a wonderful little Christmas present! It's also great timing because everyone in the house has been suffering through the flu this week. We missed all the holiday parties, concerts, & assemblies.

Not quite yet. The 21st is the winter solstice this year (shortest day of the year). So very soon we will start to see days getting longer!!
