It's hard to say 'cos he's on the bottom of the pecking order, so in my flock he's pretty submissive. He's not aggressive towards people at all but he is kinda skittish, as Polish tend to be. Personally I think he's worth more than $5 but I just wanna make room for new blood.

My buff laced polish is an absolute gentleman and very good to his hens. Not even a hint of people aggression either.

It is Penelope, he is a doll! He has my 2 NN hens, they adore him! Its my fun project. DH is building their pen first so they have more room. He is a model rooster and an absolute gentleman to his ladies. Can't wait to hatch those eggs, all 3 birds have perfect demeanor and are very social. My NN hens are from @bradselig and they are just too sweet and friendly. Both hens lay a nice large brown egg. Wonder if that will change in the offspring breeding with polish lines?

I got six eggs today and dropped one! I hate it when that happens!

I have a couple Marans that started laying again and my EE layed an egg today! She's been on hiatus for months! She's one of my original hens. Such a good girl! Been browsing CL the last couple of days looking for lumber. Pallets! Anything to work with for building my breeding pens come Spring. My plans are to have 8 total. 2 for BCM, 1 Silkie, 1 bantam Cochins, 1 Golden Cuckoo Marans, 1 Blue Copper Marans, 1 RIR and 1 Olive Egger. I'm super pumped!

, I keep trying to shave a few breeds... I just aquired Beilies so I am not downsizing as hoped LOL! My LO have started back laying, 2 eggs in 2 days. Really hoping the BCMs start up, and my youngest EEs are laying now too. Have a Blue AM roo coming soon to pair with my EEs. He will have 6 or 7 hens (Bunny may be too mean for him, lol so she may stay in the egg flock) My backup roo is a CCL, I want to keep blue eggs here

It looks like I will be breeding LO, BR, RIR, WL SLW EE BCM, BM and Game bantams OE and Moderns. My Maran are all breeder stock along with the LO. Trying to get more history on the beilies before I get too interested.

little chicks have started hatching here. Too early to pull them from the incubator for pictures. But I know there will be a few I have to sell as my blue sumatras don't hatch 100% blue.

Editing to say I have big plans for my tax refund too ~ pay off a car repair, some medical bills, and IF I have enough left over, maybe a hatcher. Most likely there will be no hatcher this year. We could also put the money into our home remodel but most of the things left to do on that cost more than the hatcher. Choices, choices, ... If only I would play and WIN the lottery.

Have you tried leaving golf balls in the nests?  Mine may lay a stray egg or two when they 1st start.  I think the whole process may catch them off guard in the beginning, but I've never had an issue once they get used to it.  They sell fake ceramic eggs or you could also make a cement one with a funnel & a balloon (hang it to dry to get the egg-shape).  I don't think the plastic Easter eggs would work unless you fill them with something to add weight.

Be careful with having cracked eggs around.  If the chickens learn that they lay delicious eggs, they might start to eat their eggs instead of you.

Yup I always have golf balls in my boxes. I've had birds for almost two years now and not had this problem until now like you said after a few eggs they figure out where the boxes are. Maybe I should take curtains off a couple boxes and see if that helps?

Injured toe. Please help.

Found a lot of blood on a hen this morning. It was on her feet & caked on her chest.
After closely checking, I believe her nail from her back toe got ripped off while roosting. (Not sure how yet)
So far, I've washed her feet & soaked the bleeding one in a dilute iodine water solution. Then applied corn starch & "Vetericyn" to the remaining nail on the toe.
She's resting in a box with pine shavings in the garage. (I'd like to avoid a house chicken if possible.)

So, what's next? What can I do about all the blood on her feathers. It's very, very cold here & I don't want poor Honey to go into shock by bringing her into the house. I don't know how the rest will react if she has bloody chest feathers. This is our 1st injury. Never had more than a nick before. My white pullet has a few specks of blood on her back. I'm pretty sure it dripped down on her.

PS- Thank you to the unknown BYC members for their advice on having a chicken 1st Aid Kit on hand. Made this morning easier to be able to treat ASAP.
