INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

One more question for the more experienced than myself: I know it is much better to use nice clean eggs to incubate, but have any of you successfully incubated cleaned eggs? If so, how did you clean them and what did you use?

I am used to cleaning layer eggs for sale with just hot water and a scrub brush. Do any of you ever incubate eggs that you've washed, and if so, did you use any kind of disinfectant (like dilute bleach) as a dip to help replace the natural bloom?

THANKS!
I brush off the crud that will come off and don't incubate really gross ones. No washing.

Hello everyone! It feels like forever since I have been on BYC. I can't wait to start filling the incubator full of eggs from my girls. As soon as I get all my stock hatched out, I will have hatching eggs for sale from all my breeds. I just thought I would let everyone know. We also will post all information on our facebook page.

Welcome back--thought you must be hibernating! I'll check ou FB.

Is anyone else sick of being sick, or is it just me?! :barnie I have been down with the flu (well, I assume the flu, though they could be the two worst colds I have ever experienced...) twice in the past three weeks! These past couple days have just been pure misery! I just want one day when I'm not constantly coughing!! :he Excuse the mini-rant, it's an unfortunate side-effect of my niece going to public school. :/

In other news, oh my gosh, new breed for the wantlist--Silkied Black Cochin bantams! :love :drool Okay, I admit it, I have a thing for silkied feathers.

700

And because I'm sick and tired and don't feel like going back to quote, some short responses:

Love all the pictures, especially the Peas and widdle chickie babies! :love

Wish I had answers for some of y'all on other topics.

Looking forward to the Chickenfest and hoping we can make it this yearn as well! :D

Good night all!

Edited because I'm tired and sick, okay?

@birdman55 once I find my cheap wine cooler on CL, I'll be in touch with you. I want to make a hatcher with a few different shelves to keep the breeds separated.
it will be super easy if that's all your going to be using it for is hatching during lock down...I cant wait to help..it will be a pleasure to once again give back to byc....I have two fridges now that im making a fridgebator...so one of them might be just for the lockdown phase I think this is a great idea that way I can keep the rotation going and keep on turning the eggs with no confusion....I cant wait its almost time...I gotta get moving cause It will be here soon....I will be hatching peas this season along with the pheasants...so im super excited

I am not a big fan of the cold but at least it kills off the bugs for a bit.
I hope you get better soon. And stay better too of course.

For those of you thinking of getting chicks but not wanting the new day old chicks, I'll be selling started chicks again this spring.

Adorable chicks. Best wishes on hatching the Peas. I like the ones that look like tiny brides. I don't have the set up for them but they are adorable in pictures.

This will be my first year trying to hatch turkey eggs.

I have not made a homemade incubator. I'm not positive it would save much money since I would need to buy all of the parts. I'm keeping my eyes on CL for a wine cooler but until I have that I'm not looking for the rest. And a kit would make it much simpler so I lose any savings there as well. BUT if done correctly, homemade might be better. Homemade cookies and biscuits and bread all turn out much better. The chicken coops I like the best are the ones we made. Homemade allows for customizing and that might be worth it for you since you want a size not offered everywhere in plastic for a cheap amount.
I made a cooler-bator & didn't have any major problems. There are some easy to follow directions & youtube videos that certainly made it simple. Incubator Warehouse even has a kit that has the fan, thermostat & heating element all in one. (I didn't know that in 2013 when I built mine.) Back then, I passed up a functional wine cooler at a thrift store. When I reconsidered & went back the next day, it was gone.

I ended up spending $20 on a new cooler, because I just couldn't find a used one at the time. Oh well.

The cost of a new styrofoam incubator is about $50-70. My incubator supplies cost a total of $50 to 60 - should have been $30-40. (I had to buy many things new, but I had some plexiglass from an old photo & recycled a computer fan & power supply.) I probably showed these pics before, but I'm still happy with my incubator. Because I built it, I can easily tweak things. (ie adding water bottles as heat sinks, plastic tubing & funnels for water, making 3 different types of egg turners, etc)

For me, the size was important. I wanted something to fit under the coffee table & be easily stored. I wanted it easy to clean, with a big viewing window, well insulated, & affordable.
I built it sideways, but otherwise, it's like all the other cooler-bators.

Of course, I also enjoy taking lots of pics as the chicks hatch.
