INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have a broody hen. All was going well with her and her chicks until about 3 days back. That is when I noticed a bit of pasty rear on 3 of her 11 chicks. These chicks are 2.5 weeks old. Pasty rear should not be an issue. But now 3 days later their rears are bare skinned and covered in white goo. It is not hardened as it would be in a day old pasty rear.
Should I take the chicks and clean them. If I clean them do I give the chicks back to the broody? Do I just take over raising these 11 chicks and toss the broody back into her original pen with her prior hen buddies?
Clean them up, one at a time. use a hair dryer to warm them up carefully (those hair dryers get hot) put back with momma. If anything else seems out of place take them from her. Usually a pasty butt is caused by an event. Think back what may have happened a few days ago. Anything frightened them, water was frozen, chicks got too warm, mamma wasn't with them... etc

If anyone is ordering Faverolles or finds someone in the central part of the state, I am interested as well.

Also looking for Marans, Buckeyes, and Mille Fleurs.

Thanks guys. Sorry I'm not on here much anymore, Life is busy!

My apologies, I just realized you said they were 2.5 wks old already! The only time I've ever seen the white goo like that on older chicks was from Cocci. That's just my experience. Doesn't always have to be bloody.

I'm also in search of the Fav. I'll let you know if I find any. I did come across "Chickens for Backyards" have them. I'm just not sure about their chicks. Never heard of them.

I said to mom (flyladyrocks) now that we lost one we have to get 1 more but if we get one more chick then she will be lonly so we have to gst 2 but what if something happens to one of them so get 3 but 3 + 8 = 11 uneven!!!!!! that can't happen? can it? so get 4 but just to make sure that they fit in get 2 more so if they don't fit in they can have their own flock but thats only 16 chickens all together and in to years they can drive!!!(1 chicken is a year) so what can hurt to get 2 more chickens? am I right?
Chicken Math!!!!! lol

I am doing this on the phone so atocorrect is messing stuff up!!!!
that happens to me allot. I talk to txt and sometimes it is really bad... lol

just check out the site I gave you in the one reply...seems like the chicken that just got sick and I had to tube feed it...similar symptoms and everything....check out the forum I sent you a couple of pages ago...there is a lot of pics for you to look at....and normally when a chicken is acting down but still alive the damage is already done....chickens don't let you know they are sick....and normally you have a short window to intervene otherwise death is right around the corner....seems like that just happens in the winter with chickens...I always loose some during these months...so sorry for your losses
I lost a Rooster this winter for no reason I could find ... He was my favorite and real good to his hens.

I came home today to a young one of two I just put out a week ago. They are about 4 mos old though, it was in the front yard all fluffed up very weak and when I picked him up he was so thin! I don't think it's been eating or drinking much. The first 3 days I carried both of them to the water and made sure they knew where it was but every time one of the big girls even looked his way he screeched and hid at my feet. The other could care less. I brought him in and he ate and drank but barely able to stand. Now he's jumping out of the box. I also gave corid in his water just in case but his poo looks fine. I had put feeders in the coop which I never do, just so they would have easy access and with free ranging my girls/guys never go in there during the day unless to lay. So I'm not sure why he's so thin all of a sudden. No parasites that I could see. Other little guy is all cuddled in between some bantams for the night and because they are bantams the LF don't pay any attention to them. So I know they aren't getting picked on. At least not bad enough to harm them. No blood etc.

They say regardless of age if a different strain of Cocci is introduced it can make them deathly ill. I've definitely had my fair share in the winter months over the years of just finding one had passed without any prior symptoms. I keep a close eye on them as I work from home most days.

Just keep watch over the others and check at night for mites. Those can suck the life right out of them while they sleep and is another reason she may have been hesitant to go in the coop at night. Just a thought.
As far as mites go does anyone know ( I know you do lol ) if I can put 7 dust in the nest boxes, I know you can put it on the chickens, but didn't know if them getting in and out of the box would kick up dust and cause any breathing problems. I don't plan on putting plies of it in the boxes, but I have bad enough luck just don't want to add fuel to the fire.

Urbanmom519 said in a few post back the raise Faverolles.

Does anyone want this Rooster? He is supper nice to people and hen, CAN NOT be around other Roosters. All my pens and cages are full right now so I have him free ranging in the front yard, way too close to the road. I put him in my horse trl, but he gets out, I put him in the garage, he gets outI will have to take he to Rockvill if no one wants him. Finding homes for Roo's is hard.
