Clean them up, one at a time. use a hair dryer to warm them up carefully (those hair dryers get hot) put back with momma. If anything else seems out of place take them from her. Usually a pasty butt is caused by an event. Think back what may have happened a few days ago. Anything frightened them, water was frozen, chicks got too warm, mamma wasn't with them... etcI have a broody hen. All was going well with her and her chicks until about 3 days back. That is when I noticed a bit of pasty rear on 3 of her 11 chicks. These chicks are 2.5 weeks old. Pasty rear should not be an issue. But now 3 days later their rears are bare skinned and covered in white goo. It is not hardened as it would be in a day old pasty rear.
Should I take the chicks and clean them. If I clean them do I give the chicks back to the broody? Do I just take over raising these 11 chicks and toss the broody back into her original pen with her prior hen buddies?
