My Black Swedish has gone broody again. Hadn't seen her leave the next box for more than a week until this morning. Really hoping this batch hatches. Her last one didn't. Poor girl was sitting on the nest for a month and a half with no luck from Thanksgiving to New Year's4 goose eggs today! Had some good friends stop by with their grandsons. We got to do a real life "Easter egg hunt" looking for hidden nests. My younger goose hens are being sneaky and laying everywhere but the goose house! the boys are 6 and 9, really had fun with them. They got to watch the pigs rooting and rolling in the mud, they were laughing at them. Both couldn't wait to pet my big boar, he was being so polite and standing still for the lil guy.
Ducks are laying like crazy, scovies are starting to nest too. Getting about 2 dozen chicken eggs a day finally!
If it works, I'll have Pekin mixes for everybody (Pekin drakes over Black Swedish, Pekin and Rouen hens, maybe even a chocolate Muscovy). Speaking of 'Scovies though, if you need to get rid of a drake before they go crazy and have to go to freezer camp, I'm pretty darn sure the chocolate 'Scovy's a girl now. Initially, she was getting so much bigger so much faster than the little lavender one that we thought she was a drake, but alas, I don't think so. She hasn't grown at all in months and still doesn't have the caruncle growth or size I'd think of as male. Plus, she trills everywhere. She is such a sweetie
On another note, About half of my 'pullets' appear to be roos, so I'll likely have some to rehome later.
Looks like I have these roos now: two EEs, one bantam light Brahma (supposed to be a standard pullet, but really does look like a bantam roo now), one buff Orp, one Welsummer, one miscellaneous red chick, and up to three partridge Cochins/ dark Brahmas (can't tell the difference yet--came from an assorted bin, and nobody knew what was in it). Tally on pullets looks like 1 Brahma, 1 Welsummer, 2 Australorps, 1 Jersey Giant, maybe one of the three Cohin.Brahmas, 1 GL Wyandotte, 1 SL Wyandotte, and three EEs (of the 6+ I purchased)--all standards.
