INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I still have chicks brooding in the pantry, and porch....ugh! The dust is really bad from any chicks of course. My lil mallards like to explore if mom doesn't come see them at 4AM! My goal is not brooding or hatching in the house, or garage period. But my goal is also to add to my flocks I intend to keep. My Incubator is still in the pantry to keep temp and humidity stable. DH would kill me if I had birds in the bedroom, but if its a special bird, I guess I better be wary

I should have been clearer--they aren't in OUR bedroom! Even I am not that crazy! They are in a spare bedroom that is rarely used. I will have to move all the hatching action into my daughter's bedroom soon, but left most in the spare bedroom until her spring break is over. Right now, she has only had to put up with one 'bator. Hubby will be starting his seedlings soon, and I have to stop using his grow table. Theoretically, I could leave the babies in the short-term brooders on that bed, though, and might do that to avoid having to deep clean TWO bedrooms when this is over--which will be when my orders slack off and I can finally raise some babies for myself! The only chicks I have going just for me are the Bielefelders, which I get to check for viability sometime between Friday and Sunday. I assume they will be a little harder to candle than the light brown eggs my Orps lay. The ones I have are pretty uniformly a medium-brown color.

@hoosiercheetah I need someone to design a way to candle an entire GQF tray of eggs at one time. I'm thinking of using a brooder lamp with an energy efficient bulb. But the box to hold the lamp in place and support the tray full of eggs is not something I can easily draw up. I'm not even sure if the metal cone would be needed or just any old light fixture and a clear top of sorts to set the tray on or correctly spaced groves for the edges of the tray to sit on as in the incubator tray holders.
I thought of you as a person who could draw up plans and be willing to post them.

I *think* I'm visualizing what you have in mind, but I don't know anything about incubators or the trays. If you can take some pictures for me, or post links to pictures of what they look like, I can try to cook something up.

Also, do you want to be able to use it inside the incubator, or would you take the tray out, candle it, and then put it back?

This sounds like a fun project, but I might be a little slow on my end of it; I'm up to my eyeballs in fun projects. ;-)

And you're supposedly cutting back?

They're gorgeous!
I can't make the trip Saturday, but if you have any nice silkies that you would be willing to hold until Bloomington......
I am cutting back, but the lady drove to Foleys and bought these SLW as chicks, was moving to town, and came WAY down on the price. But now Megan Loves them, first LF she has ever really liked, When she goes out there the whole group of them run to her for mealworms, so looks like I'm stuck with them. !!!

Megan is keep a small group of silkies/showgirls/frizzles/ and one frizzled showgirl. I'm giving a quad to my grandson Matthew (Heathers son). That leaves me about 7 hens to sell.

I use one bedroom as a hatching room, then mine go to the grage, hasn't been a vehicle in there in years. !!

Having a hard time getting on here to post. My mom is falling more, won't use her walker ugh! I am afraid to leave her alone, let alone go out of the house.
I feel like I am raising children again caring for my parents... the hard part is separating the feeling that they were the ones leading the way. Its up to me now, and some times my parents don't agree with my choices. NO Mom, you do not need Arby's sandwiches loaded with salt, and Dad, forget eating all that 3 pound roll of summer sausage you just bought full of nitrates! Dad is driving.. BAD. He will get Mom whatever she wants even if it is bad for her. And you betcha he will get whats really bad for him! We all cheat a bit on our diet. Sometimes its just a health risk.
Almost all my breeds/species are laying. Scovies not yet, but nesting..I think I got my first scovy egg today, found a duck egg in the loft of the main coop.. Guinea hens, the oldest girls are also nesting. Guinea boys want to kill everything so its close, they are in attack mode over anything near the hens. Quail are finally laying again! I got 3 dozen eggs today between ducks, geese and chickens, 2 quail eggs

Setting Embden goose, EE, LO eggs later today.

My mom lived with us for 5 yrs, before she passed. It IS like having a KID in the house. !!

Mine are in a spare bedroom also. I have tubs for chicks, 1 sportsmen incubator and 3 strofoam incubators that I hatch in

As you can tell , Indiana folks here too . Got 3 Rhode Island reds last fall. All laying now. New run all built this week. Still deciding on sand in run or not. It's 5 1/2 x 18 ft and covered. Been doing some reading and it still isn't clear whether I should haul sand or pine chips. Hmmm
