Oh yes, they are coming with us, no doubt Will let you know about the White Leghorns. They are quite the deal up here and people know how wonderful those birds are from MSU poultry barns. Nice chatting with you Rex and Brett and I look forward to meeting you soon!

The northeast indiana Poultry, Waterfowl, exotics swap meet has been workin on sending flyers out to people regarding the swap meet. My chicks (born Feb) have adjusted To outside world! And I think they look great for hatchery chicks. I don't have any problems with hatchery chicks at all. These little girls are healthy and happy! The light brahmas are prob my fav so far. But the white leghorns are looking good to!

I love my brahmas too! One of my favorite breeds. I was able to clean out 2 pens today (man was that wind cold!) and got 2 silkie breeding pens seperated. I always hate moving chickens around as at night I have to go back out and toss their fluffy butts in the coop for the next 3 or so nights! And I now have over a dozen eggs Ive collected since Friday! Slowly they are getting there!

Lovely little chickens. Hatchery chicks are fun to raise for a good variety in the flock. I like all of my breeder chickens best but I do get a kick out of raising up a variety pack from the hatchery each year to sell as started chickens. I get the little chicks in the winter just so they can be of a good size by now.

Poor Tilde was at the bottom of the stack. "Can't... Breathe...." (P.S., Leahs mom, you may be interested to know that our Tilde seems to be contemplating brooding as well!

Seems like everyone is on broody overload except me! I wouldn't mind having a broody this spring myself.

It's not just you - I jinxed myself by WANTING a broody, no such luck. Looks like I'm going to have to go with a brooder for this year's additions.

Silkie eggs everywhere! My flock is still all together, so these are mystery color eggs. Should come out very pretty though. I also have a bunch of Alpaca yarn left too if any knitters or crocheters need some. Here are some of my birds to show what could hatch from the eggs.

Hey all, just wanted to chime in to be part of this great Indiana thread.

As you can tell , Indiana folks here too . Got 3 Rhode Island reds last fall. All laying now. New run all built this week. Still deciding on sand in run or not. It's 5 1/2 x 18 ft and covered. Been doing some reading and it still isn't clear whether I should haul sand or pine chips. Hmmm

I know a few of you were rooting for her, so I thought I'd let y'all know, Cubby didn't make it to her 10th birthday.

She had been wasting away for a couple weeks now, even though she was eating. I think the only reason she had been eating was because she considered what I was giving her (wetted crumbles) a treat. She stopped eating a couple days ago, which I think was the beginning of the end for her. I was able to bribe her into eating with one of her favorite foods, scrambled eggs, but I don't think there was anything to be done by that point. She was in the process of dying when I woke up this morning, very tired and disconnected. She passed away quietly an hour or two later. She was about 2 weeks away from her birthday, so close. I was looking forward to putting together her birthday 'cake'...

Martinsville RK has white and brown turkeys in. Runner rouen and Khaki Campbell ducks along with straight run BA, RIR and BOs. .oh and the Jersey Giants. My aunt said they are supposed to be getting bantams in soon. Didn't know what kind. Probably the mix variety like last year.

Just a reminder everyone... The turkeys you will get at the farm stores 99% of the time are broad breasted, and a hybrid. They can't reproduce but the hens will lay eggs. They will gain an enormous amount of weight, and can easily "flip" (heart attack). Are also prone to splayed legs if they can eat freely!

Ive been very concerned about AI but my son really wants a duck. Opinions? I like the look of a grown rouen but also khaki, any words of wisdom from experienced duck owners?

Oh and no males so I will not have one, and we have no pond Or body of water...well a pool..but I would look to install a pond insert of sorts.

Highly recommend Muscovy!!! I have a few different duck breeds but I adore the scovys, especially the hens. You really don't need a pond, just a kiddie pool is fine. Lots of colors, barred and pied also. Scovys are also "quackless" but they trill, peep and make a "ha ha ha" sound. All duck and goose breeds need to "dunk". They thrust their heads into water to clear the nasal openings and to also preen. buckets of water work fine for that too!
I keep lavender, chocolate and black. here is what my original quad looked like as youngsters. I have since added lavender to my flock. (I use a tote lid to spread my wood chips. lol) Muscovy color and pattern change each time they molt, so they keep their color but may be lighter, darker.. more or less barring and pied. Some will also stay a solid color. I have a pure white hen, only her crest has a lavender splash, and the feet and bill are lavender also.
