INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Greetings, peeps. Wanted to say hello. We have had chickens in the past. Currently are chicken- less :-(.

We are really hoping to get some CCL pullets, Welsummer pullets and a Welsummer roo.

This may be a big dream but if we could choose, those. We are trying to avoid hatcheries also, especially based on our research about the Welsummers. Trying to get a docile roo especially.

Wanting to start with baby chicks. We enjoy our flock and hope to have some before long. Look forward to meeting everyone.

Update on the little red hen waterers and feeders. They work great, so good I bought a third waterer and one feeder.

So far the Welsummer roo I got from RK is super easy going (and quiet!). He doesn't get into stuff, doesn't peck anybody, hardly ever peeps even. He's about 8-wks old so he's got some growing left to do, but right now, I think he's a winner. Both he and the Welsummer hen are pretty much invisible in flock dynamics right now. Both very non-aggressive (not bottom of flock hierarchy by any means, just quiet and nice about being top birds). They're not the friendliest, but they're not afraid of us either. Both will eat from our hands though neither has yet hopped onto a lap and asked for pets as yet. Picked both up from the RK in Martinsville.

I didn't get any mean ones from RK last year either, as far as docility goes. My then-five-year-old could catch them no problem. I've heard lots of mixed reviews about RIR, but all three of the ones I got at RK were very sweet and put up with kids chasing them and picking them up. Very sweet tempered and quiet birds.

Thanks for the information. Do you know where Rural King got their birds from?

I'd just do it all at one time.  Add the sponges and warmer to hot water right before you put the eggs back in.  it is easier to fill the water trough without the eggs and turner in the way.

That's what I normally do, but heard that stoping the turning sooner helps hatch rate?? I'll just stick with what I know lol thanks Sally

I have no idea lol. I was wondering though what percentage of fertility did you get out of my eggs? I was just curious how my boys are doing since I have 4 roos with 34 hens.

All the Cochins have made it so far, and I think one Silkie egg was a dud. I'm anxious to see all the barnyard mixed chicks lol!

I think they get their eggs from Townline, but I don't know if all RKs get them from the same hatchery or just the last one we knew for sure. Martinsville has been the only one I've visited that had Welsummers ordered, but you could special order/request them, and the store will get them in. Also, if you're willing to wait and I'm able to make this happen, I'd like to breed the pair I have next spring. I'm wanting to wait and see what they grow up like, but I'm optimistic so far. Really hoping they're close to type and lay big dark eggs, but hatcheries being hatcheries, I won't know until she starts laying. Plus, the breed as a whole is rather less than predictable where the color of its eggs are concerned (speckles vs no speckles, depth of color and such).
