wasn't really thinking it was a small house in city I didn't see that part specially because if was told you couldn't have "live stock" withen city limits

For now until Indianapolis passes a proposed law /regulation, goats are allowed. @flyladyrocks has more info on the upcoming proposed changes in animal restrictions.

i didnt say they were just surviving the goat looked healthier then alot of farm raised goats. he deff takes good care of it... also fyi all the "balanced diet" you get from the store comes from a field it all originates from the ground its highly possible that he knows this stuff and gets it directly from the source possibly being even healthier then the store purchased stuff.im not disagreeing with you either but people have this false sense that store bought food or feed is somehow healthier then just getting the stuff from the "wild" its really not.i understand that the manufacturers of these product have the ability to have higher concentrations of chemical a or b or vitamin a or b but in reality this isnt good for people or animals the bodies have evolved to process only so much the rest goes out as waste you end up wasting more then you should. and when we domesticated animals they still ate naturally like go to this pasture or that we didnt make artificial feed or processed feed till maybe the last 100 years or less and ironically the animal health issues have began in the last 80-100 years.so believe what you want but ill go with the facts and believe that unless your raising race horses or other super beast processed feed is not better then natural.. now there are a few companies and i mean few.. that simply just add the natural stuff so its in one spot but its really not needed for instance my gfs sister has a few pets she feeds hay.. she must get it from a processed manufacturer! some of the feed has dried fruit added some dont but the over all point is we live next to a hay field.. she could simply just walk over there get it and add the dry fruit herself and save alot of money.


im highly aware that this is really just my opinion, but i had to get that off my chest natural/man made or "improved" war will continued to the end of time ( fyi im a hypocrite because i use man made/improved or processed everyday)

Might want to re-read what I said as you seem to have put a lot of words in my mouth. I said having a balanced diet was important. Not once mentioned natural vs manufactured Diets. You can't just give a chicken organic cracked corn and expect it to thrive. Survive maybe. Putting a goat in a field to live with no other suppliments to balance the diet would have a similar effect on its health. That was all I was saying.

Putting a goat in a field to live with no other suppliments to balance the diet would have a similar effect on its health. That was all I was saying.

I think supplements and other similar things arnt always needed maybe in most current day situations because few people own enough land these days but if you live on ten acres or more of "good" land I think a goat or chicken or whatever could more then likely get all it's needed dietary things although finding this place might be like looking for a needle granted I feed my chickens like 90% processed food which includes the needed supplements I just hope that one day that number could drastically drop to near zero I have a few friends around here that own a lot of land and they said they rarely have to give them anything due to free ranging

It was a person posting in a facebook post, so no actual link to an article. SandHill is in IA, right? Are there any other hatcheries there? I wonder who it is and when it will hit the news.

Just wanted to share that someone posted that the originating "hatchery" had more than 2,000 Peafowl, exotic pheasants, Endangered goose species, swans destroyed. It does not sound like a typical hatchery, but what a freaking shame!

Maybe there is some confusion on using the term suppliment. A suppliment does not have to be a mineral or vitamin or synthetic compound added to a diet. You could suppliment the cracked corn diet I used earlier with sunflower seeds or even a meat for added protein. As with goats if you put them in a pasture of alfalfa you may need to suppliment that diet with an oat hay or Timothy hay (I know nothing about goats or their diets. This is strictly an example).
Another example would be someone in the Midwest US living exclusively off the land. Since the land is iodine deficient, they are going to have to suppliment their diet with either a high iodine food or as most do purchase and use iodized salt to prevent negative side effects to their health.

Animal care is very dependent on each owner. I'm sure many other goat owners provide way more than I do while other provide less. But to provide as little as you mentioned just would not be the best choice for a plot of land in our area.

I'm posting this more natural film about raising goats. Please notice it is not a recent film but from the 1950s. Its just over 15minutes long. It shows goats being allowed to range and find food. It also shows a few human interventions and provisions being provided even back then when things were on a more natural approach.

While this video won't show a person everything there is to know about goats it will show that there is work to keep a healthy goat as well as a few things to buy.

I have been researching threatened breeds, I really wanted to support a breed on the verge of extinction and researched all of the breeds on the lists that I found.  I went back and forth between Delawares and the Breda for their reputed personalities, but happened to find Breda chicks available now so I decided to try them.  I also like that Breda tend not to be broody (I have enough of those to battle and won't be broody hatching), do ok with confinement and are food thrifty.  I also don't have any white egg layers.  I am excited! 

Where are you thinking of moving to?

There's a small chance we will be moving to Wisconsin. DH has been looking at a company up there but we haven't decided if we are willing to relocate.

@chickcrazed oh I really hope it wasn't Sand Hill. They are trying so hard to preserve threatened breeds. (FYI I was researching Bredas a few weeks ago. So excited for you) There are other hatcheries in IA. McMurray is but they'd have way more in their incubator. On the AI map it has a place near Spencer,IA from the beginning of June.

@SallyinIndiana that is a great goat video. We watched it when you posted it before. Editing cause I accidentilly hit submit. So easy to do on my phone. I know there is so much to consider before Addi g goats. There are a couple if those little books I read this Spring which us why I saidit would be best to wait til next year. Looks like we have to push up our plans but that us doable. I think we need Nigerian Dwarf or Mini Nu Ian's. But then you torture me with selling your Oberhasli doe and @jchny2000 with her Dowling!
