INDY REZONE UPDATE!!!!

If you live in Indy, First, if there are things- poultry or otherwise - you are concerned about being over regulated, you need to try to find the info that is important to you in the 700+ page document. You can see the current proposal here:http://www.indy.gov/egov/city/dmd/planning/services/current/Pages/ordinance.aspx
For example, not being able to work on a personal lawnmower or car unless it is in a garage/carpot. Or did you know they want to REDUCE the number of parking spaces downtown – of particular concern to us since I have a disabled husband. If you can’t find what you are looking for you need to contact Indy rezone and ask where it is (contact info below). Then I urge you to contact your Councilor and let them know how unhappy you are with Indy Rezone and do everything you, and your friends and (egg/chick) customers can to get to the City Council meeting where this will be presented.
Indy Rezone will be presented at the July 13 meeting at 7:00 PM in the City-County building, I am assuming on the 2nd floor in the public assembly room. Let's Pack that place with Poultry people! From there it will go to committee to be discussed. I am not sure what committee, we need to find out from our councilor, my guess is Metropolitan and Economic Development or Community Affairs. This is a battle only a couple people cannot wage on our own. Many people need to make their voice heard. Our government is supposed to be by the people, for the people, your councilor is supposed to represent you – they cannot do that if they don’t know what how their constituents feel about proposed regulations. Find out who your councilor is here: http://maps.indy.gov/GovProfile/ you put in your address and check “elected Officials”
If that does not work you can call the Council office and find out - 327-4242 http://www.indy.gov/eGov/Council/Pages/home.aspx

Important things to note, as we have picked about the livestock sections – it says “The following domesticated animals are permitted outside” …. For poultry only chickens, quail, pigeons and ducks are mentioned. That means no turkeys, guineas … I know people with both in the city – we have turkeys. Granted there is a rather foggy grandfather type clause that supposedly means we can have them but honestly, the average person can’t understand that section. And the personal livestock license mentioned only covers the poultry I listed above.
Also, if you sell eggs to eat or fertile hatching eggs, or chicks or pullets/cockerels… it says “For personal use only”. You need to make sure your customers know they may not be able to buy from you – they need to make their voice heard too. Especially in light of the nation wide egg shortage. Farm Fresh eggs are suddenly more desirable and necessary!

What concerns me the most after the fair is that 4-H in Marion county is talking about phasing out much of the livestock. Swine, goats, sheep. There were not even goats shown this year. Only 2 people signed up and they didn’t show up to show. The animals have always been our favorite part of the fair! Many years we have not gone on any rides at all. I talked with 4-H and FFA who want to have livestock at their schools and were incorrectly told by someone in the city they currently could not – and their kids in their clubs want to show animals. There are multiple schools in the city who currently have chickens and goats. Indy Rezone will make things even harder. Caring for animals teaches a level of responsibility and character nothing else can duplicate!

Under minimum required housing per adult animal: Coop must provide a minimum floor space of 1 sq. ft. per poultry up to 5 lbs. Poultry over 5 lbs. require 5 sq. ft. plus one additional sq. foot for every 5 lbs. of bird weight
So if my bird is just under 5 lbs it needs 1 square foot and just over it needs FIVE square feet??
This part is our absolute favorite part of it – we laughed so hard we cried: Breeding must occur indoors, after dark, or within an opaque-fenced area.
As a friend of our said, Roosters mate 2 times a day – AM and PM. I mean COME ON let’s get realistic here!
IMO Indy Rezone is an overregulation disaster. My husband and I are meeting with the Indy Rezone people at 10:00 Wednesday morning. I think they need to hold more public meetings that are widely publicized like they said they would and did not – facebook, twitter, through the Urban Ag office newsletters. Doubt that will happen though.
Please folks – if you live in Indy get the word out and make your voice heard! Don't think you will just be able to just fly under the radar and keep doing what you are doing or just let others fight the battle. DH and I can't do this alone! Others need to step up too!
