INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello! It kinda threw me seeing pictures of my birds, lol ...ones that I didn't post :) See you Saturday!

I did the same thing. I got several EE before I found a breeder with nice birds. I drove 2 hours once. Now I always ask for pictures before I make a trip. I will say my Easter Eggers are sweet birds and pretty good layers. I have quite a few breeds now and really like the variety of egg colors.
heyyyyy!!!

I sell in Indy and charge $3/doz for mine. Most people don't even blink when I tell them the price.

As for White Laced Red,  Mcmurray sells those.  I'd be interested, but certainly don't need 25 of them.  I'd go in on a group order to get them though.

Looks like Light Brahma to me.

I'd also go in on an order of the Cornish! Just to throw that out there...

Hey guys. I have family in Indiana so I visit often. Does anyone have any Silkies I can take home on my way?
I have a few chicks left pm if interested.

I paid $20 for her. She's in the coop with 3 other young hens that were all put in the coop at the same time. She's not being bullied and the other hens are very sweet to her. They let her have her space. She is not eating or drinking as much as she should because she's too afraid or whatever to even move. I just don't want her to be afraid or in shock for a few more days while I try to get her used to it and then she get sick and I can't take her back. I have a few EE's already but I bought her with the understanding I would have blue eggs. The 3 ameraucanas I posted pics of are $40 for the trio.
That is an awesome price for trio.

I want an araucana so so bad! Does anyone have one? Will throw dollars at you!!
I was eating when I read this. The: Will throw dollars at you!! made me lol

and in turn choke. But i'm ok just thought it was funny.

Breeding calculators--to figure what his kids'll look like :D
O ok, don't know anything about that.

I have a Lavender Orp from her as well as two Oliver Eggers. She is my "go to" when I can't find a breed close. I have Legbar chicks coming from Greenfire next week to add to my Legbar flock and a trio of Welsummers coming from Dutch Connection. I will be ready to hatch babies next spring

could you shoot @Ol Grey Mare a message, was looking for good Welsummers?

Hi everyone. I'm a new member ( after doing a little lurking here and there for a while...) I'm located in Indianapolis and have a flock of 11 that are almost 5 months old and are laying about five eggs a day now.
Can anyone tell me what the going rate for a dozen eggs is around here nowadays? Planning ahead a little.... Thanks!
I'm on the Northwest side of Indy and we charge $4 per dozen (mixed sizes, mostly med & large). We sell out every week and have a waiting list. I just told my customers that I'm not selling any more eggs this year. The girls are molting and really slowed laying, so it's time for their worming and keeping a few eggs for ourselves to keep us through the winter.

I have the same incubator as the first styrofoam one my success rate dropped a lot but I think it might be because of low fertility or maybe they are spending to much time in the coop before being brought in but a lot arnt developing beyond developing the air cell... I had two swaps one 10 eggs one 9 and first ten I had 1 hatch second so far none
Any ideas

Interesting. What's your coop setup?

I just want to point out to some "newbies" here that I cannot stress enough how important it is to quarantine ANY new birds you acquire, whether members here or other sources. Family, etc...doesn't matter. ..if you care about your birds and do not want to be in a position to have to put them all down or be limited to not moving birds off of your property because of disease. ..Quarantine

Most good Biosecurity measures are for at least 30 days. Granted there's always that risk of it not raising it's wary head during that time but like @jenaman experience and @daskhan for reasons such as getting accustomed to a new place or being able to keep a better watchful eye over behavior and health to know it's not because of a new pecking order but it's a problem with the bird.

Food for thought!

You'd appreciate finding something out in quarantine rather than your entire flock that you've worked so hard to build.

I cringe every time I read that someone has put a new bird right in with the others. Petrifies me!!

**edited to add**
Quarantine can be as simple as having a decent sized carrier or crate or box that is not going to be used for any other purpose. Typically diseases are passed via saliva/bodily fluids which keeping them to their own feeder and waterer, only using a specific clean scooper for them in their own feed container, washing hands thoroughly and tending to it after your own birds and ideally located in an area (shed/garage/basement) that your other birds/chicks aren't in. Because some diseases are airborne and take no more than some dust particles to transfer! May seem extreme at times but I'm telling you there are countless tears shed over this very thing by many loving poultry owners!!

Huge hugs to everyone as I only post this because I care! ;)

Was hoping to get some Black Copper Marans from a local family owned hatchery this past Spring but they didn't call to verify with me when the BCM's hatched

If they are only developing air cells, and not developing any further, I'd it's more likely you have a fertility issue. Have you gotten a second (or third) thermometer to double check the actual temps of the incubator?

Possibly depends on what sallyindiana says about her heritage roo and possibly other chickens right now I'm trying to figure out how to get the roo I bought from her to act like a roo... It's not so much that he's not trying to mate it's the fact that all my buff girls are chasing him around showing dominance over him which is odd to me I would think he would atleast be dominant over hens... Lol
The Heritage RIR are VERY slow developing. If he's not doing his job, it's probably because he's not ready yet. And The pecking order involves all the birds, dominant hens will chase off a submissive roo just like they do the lower order hens. If he's trying to mate and getting chased off, just give him time and make sure there aren't more dominant roos around.

Quote: I will be in the market for some welsummer chicks in the spring. My two Wellie girls are getting old, and I'd like to continue to get the pretty terra cotta eggs they lay.

Quote: I have a breeder contact that I can get hatching eggs from in the spring. Plus @Jchny2000 should have some too. Will keep you in the loop.
