INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Now that I'm all caught up, I have a cute story for ya'll, ( its probably 1 of those had to be there type of stories but going to tell it anyway cause I thought it was funny.

We don't have a tractor to move our round bales of hay and not enough barn space to have enough sq bales for the winter, so we have to tow our round bales to the horse pasture when needed. BUT it is so muddy right now that we cant do real well... so yesterday late afternoon DH and I were playing tip the bale into the bed of the pick-up. that was too heavy so we tipped it onto our little flat dump trailer, was still a chore to say the least nut it worked, then from the trailer we tipped it into the bed of the truck. DH goes as fast as he can to get through the mud to where the bale goes, then we have to tip it out of the truck, easier then getting it in I'll tell ya.
Now the whole time we are doing all this it is lightly snowing, the chickens, goats, horses and dogs are all watching the show and doing their thing.
So we get the bale out of the truck I remove the netting and we place the ring around the bale, DH again goes as fast as he can to get OUT through the mud.... he no more then gets through the gate when the sky lets lose of sleet and alot of it and coming down fast!!!!
The chickens, goats, horses and the dogs haul butt for the houses and barns at dead runs!!!!! I have never seen 2 acres of ground full to the brim with animals look so empty, so fast, in all my life!!!

The chickens were clucking, the goats were yelling and the dogs were whining, and here I was getting the tar beat out of me closing gates behind DH as fast as I could so I could get out of it too.... DH just sat in the truck and waited it out!! Butt head!! Then it turned to snow and the ground was covered in less then a minute. Have I ever told ya I HATE winter???

Big disappointment in my hatchery BCM's ( I knew it was a long shot ) they are laying Light brown eggs, but they are big. If I keep them they will go into the layer flock, the big eggs just might save them, but they will have to come off their attitudes. Still waiting on the FBM's that aren't supposed to be hatchery to start laying to see what I get from them. Better be some DARK eggs for what I paid for them, and I want them for my OE project. I lost my splash Marran yesterday, Just died... no reason I could find. I think it had something to do with all this wet ground even tho she showed no signs of being ill.

Here it is 3 am and I'm up due to something waking me...as I look out my bedroom window from bed I see a large owl fly over my deck!!

Sorry to say, as I run out dog following, there it goes again and my dog took off like a mad hornet! Well my little d'uccles roo that refused to sleep in the coop but rather hang with the "big dogs" Peas and turkeys that is, was laying in blood on the deck!

Mind you this is now where all of my large birds have began roosting for over a month now which I suspected for this reason. I've heard barred owls for years without incident but shortly after a few of the Peas retreated from the rooftops I heard the eerie Hoot of the Great Horned Owl. Then I knew that's why they were moving to lower ground.

My white Peacock just honking up a storm, and Rocky as usual nestled against the house between the soffit and greenhouse, the family of momma, 2 babe's and big Blue were gone. So I went on a search and found them all on the ground at the back access garage door. All appeared to be ok but the little guy who lost his life tonight was between them all. He wasn't eaten but had a bloody face. Guessing the owl came down and killed him on impact and the commotion of the other Peas flying about the owl didn't manage to feast or fly off with him.

My dog won't come inside now and just keeps scouring the woods.

That's the 2nd d'uncle roo I've lost to an owl. Not sure why these little guys won't go in at night!!

A bit of brighter news..while I was sitting here wide awake because well...I've been outside for 20 mins in this frrezing morning...and now can't go back to bed..I heard chirping coming from the incubator! !

Yes I know it's December! I set some of my Blue silkie eggs several weeks ago and I have 10 of 12 that made it to lockdown. She's been laying up a storm and since my partridge girl has been brooding 3 babies I set'em when I've got'em! Silkies here are sporadic layers when they aren't brooding sooo...sounds like I'll have me some new babes soon!

@ellymayRans
Sorry about your D'uccle roo. Bummer.:hugs  But congrats on the chicks. How are the rescue peacocks? Any updates?

Thanks, yeah it is a huge bummer for sure. He was a sweetie.

The rescue peas are doing well. I have 2 pairs left to rehome. I've had 3 inquiries for them but only one directly, the others were by word of mouth, I'm really hoping for them to be going to their new homes by end of next week.

I am also reaching back out today in hopes to rescue more this weekend. I want to take advantage of our nicer weather these next few weekends.

So I guess you'll be babysitting all winter now?? lol Congrats!!

I've only been breeding towards olive eggers for 2 years. Always ending up with males. This Easter hatchalong my aunt and I did it together. I built her an incubator and gave her eggs. Well I ended up with 2 hens and she with 1. Hers started laying a couple of weeks ago and check it out! I told her you would know she'd end up with the winner!!

Got any BCM roos you want to part with in a few months? I was planning on trying some sex linked olive eggers this spring and then I realized I just processed both of my black roos!

I think your story is funny! The summer I was interning with a dairy vet we were out on a call when a thunderstorm blew in. It was on of those storms where it looks like a curtain of water moving across the land. Anyway there were probably 150 dairy cows that came running, full speed, across the field and into the barn ahead of this curtain of water falling from the sky. It was hilarious I wish I'd had a camera with me!

@Browncow15 I don't have Black but do have Blue. I also have a few Olive Egger roos. I processed all but 2 of my BCM roos. I was going to process the Blue that Saturday with the others but didn't catch him that morning.
