INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We have so many ups and downs on our thread! I can't imagine not having our Indiana Thread of like-minded people who grieve with those who've lost beloved friends and cheer when we see new babies and beautiful creatures.

@jchny2000 ~ I am so sorry to hear about Gracie.

I'm glad that you found her and that she knew you were trying to help her. If I didn't live in a subdivision area, I would want geese more than anything after first seeing yours several years ago. They are such sweet and elegant birds.

Sometime when you're up to it, I ran across this interesting book that's too expensive to buy (it's a textbook), but you can read large sections of many books on Amazon by clicking on Look Inside. http://www.amazon.com/Avian-Cognition-Exploring-Intelligence-Individuality. This book has a chapter on geese. (Libraries are also, of course, good sources).
Glad you found out what it is and that it is treatable, will have to watch my flock. Lacy has tried 2 times to raise chicks. She has bad luck and they end up getting killed ( Falcon and dog )
@chick rookie I can tell that Lacy would be a good mom! I had taken her egg away to discourage her broodiness since she is sick. She seemed upset that it was gone, so I gave her a brown paper mache egg. She was happy to have it, but apparently it wasn't enough— I looked in on her later, and noticed part of her dish sticking out from under her—then I saw her trying to tuck it in more! I had used the flat orange dish to elevate her snack plate. Poor thing, I wish I could give her a couple of hatching eggs.

Below: When I brought Lacy a new snack, I saw a corner of the orange dish sticking out
from underneath her. lol Then, she starts pecking around on the green bowl that is
elevating her new snack as though she was thinking about tucking it under, too!

I am happy that she is eating well and drinking her Tylan water, but she doesn't seem better. She sounds like she needs a vaporizer with Vick's! Of course I could kick myself for not getting her to the vet sooner, but she suddenly changed. She went from an occasional rattle to noisy breathing (not gasping or anything, more of a congested sound) and occasionally sneezing. Since she's been sick, I've only taken her outside (across the street) once a day. It's been warm. She takes a dust bath (not too dusty because of recent rain) and free ranges for around 20 mins. and then wants to go in—just like my Bonbon did when she was broody.

My other five girls are doing fine and have also enjoyed the warm temps. I'm so glad it's Daylight Saving Time! Yay!

@farmguy2007 ~ She is very pretty! What breed is she? Kind of reminds me of my Bantam Birchen Cochin, Lacy (pictured above) —they're both in the mama position.
@atrueb00 It's great to have you back! Thanks for posting all of the Upcoming Poultry Events on page 4693.
Loved all of your photos, too—gorgeous peafowl and more! That's interesting about your handsome dog Stitch's training to be a caregiver dog. Does that mean he will be placed in another home to help someone?

@ellymayRans ~ OMG!!!!! That's all I can say!

I should be outside doing yard work but I have this other project I'm doing for my best friend that she has no clue I'm doing!! I made this blanket for my sister in law for my nephew, I took my old bridesmaids dress and made it into a blanket. Well I'm doing the same for my best friend and her daughter, taking my bridesmaids dress that I wore in her wedding and making a blanket. She called me this morning telling me all these crazy dreams she's had which I remember those crazy pregnancy dreams! But she has dreamt a few times now that her daughter is coming early! She's due in 1 month! 3 days after my birthday!! So now I'm panicking a bit trying to get this blanket done over my spring break...oops! Thankfully my mother in law is taking my son over night so I plan on sewing sewing sewing sweat shop here tonight!!! Lol Here's a pic of the fabric cut out and kind of pieced together just to get an idea...the yellow fabric is the dress fabric. The pink fabric above is what's going on the back of the blanket and if I have enough around the edging on the front!

That's a beautiful project! It's right in style, too— Pantone Color Institute issues a color of the year but for 2016, they picked two. Not just "pink and blue" Haha. Rose Quartz; "a warmer embracing rose tone" and Serenity "cooler tranquil blue" — reflect the current consumer trend for calmer, soothing tones.

@pipdzipdnreadytogo I agree that Silkie chicks are even more adorable than other chick who are amazingly adorable! lol I think it's the Silkie sheen that makes them look like those chenille easter chicks. And I have to admit that when Bonbon had chicks the first time, it instantly became one of the most cherished events of my life, which sounds a little crazy. I just felt so lucky to be able to watch their interactions each day. So fascinating and sweet.

NPIP testing done for another year - all negatives !
all the birdies behaved & cooperated nicely (ok - well some of them L.O.L.).
also 2 coop floors shoveled out & new bedding added - now, only 4 more to go .
day 7 into the latest upcoming hatch. will candle tues nite for fertility check
Good news! And good luck with the candling!

M2H am so excited for your new broody girl.
We have realized it was not Gracie but her daughter that passed, so hard to tell since I did not raise them. It was Georgette the baby that was lost.. she was 8 months old. I found skin and feathers on the barb wire fence at the very far west side of our land. I know now at least what happened to her. At least now I know why and can prevent it from happening again. Someday we will have this land cleared and safer for the animals we keep.

Haven't had much computer time lately. Been a busy week with a sick hubby, kids' school projects, a house guest from FL, teaching several classes, and building a brooder & EcoGlow-like heater... in my spare time. (I'll post pics when it's fully completed.) Anyway, my test hatch eggs are in lock down & I hope to see chicks on Tues.

Cuddles Update: She's back up in the pecking order & enjoying life in her flock. She still has a very firm abdomen & feels bony. She's at least eating & drinking.

Also:
Over the past week, I've been seeing some hawks circle way up high. A few times, one has been low enough for me to see its red-tail. My awesome roos make the warning & the hens take immediate shelter. So far, they have not swooped low across the yard. Just wondering if these are scouting visits. The hawk (or sometimes 2) seem to be circling in a pattern that slowly moves across the sky. Is this just how they work or have my chickens peaked their interest, so they'll keep coming back? The Coopers hawk was worse. That bird just camped out in our backyard for a month. People & noise did not scare it.

If I'm outside when a hawk is spotted, I make sure to get the dogs & kids to run around & make noise.

Hawks here have been the same way but I was giessing its their mating season, so many screeching and together..

Will be back on later to catch up. Thanks everyone for your kind words, unfortunately Gracie passed away between 330-4am. I feel she had too much blood loss as severe as her wounds were. Just devastated, my geese are my pets. I'm not convinced it wasn't a predator, I suspect a great horned owl if it was.
So sorry to hear she Passed I was hoping she would recover, as I know you were.

Barbed wire is nasty stuff. I can use it here cause I have a fence climber ( Ransom my gelding ) and he would tear himself up on it. And I have a whole roll of it too...

My Buffs are mourning. I guess I am too, They finally have settled back in and all the geese are asleep. I have never seen them pack so tightly together before. Spent the day looking for any evidence of Gracie having been caught in something. Theres nothing I can find. Convinced its the owl. My donkey has chased it off numerous times. We are moving the geese into her pasture.
Your Donkey sounds like she will be a great deterrent to ANY predator .

One of the five guineas also in background sneakin in pic like a guinea would do!! Well no need to go to rural king and buy baby chicks now....hehe
pretty hen what kind of babies will she be hatching?

I love the blanket ideal too, that will be awesome.

they are matting here too we scared a pair away by shooting over their heads and so far they have not come back... hope it stays that way. Someone reported us for " shooting them " and DNR came out... after we told them what we done and he went and checked the area for DEAD birds he left without another word. Stupid neighbors!!!! Will be SO glade to be rid of them!!!
