INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have my cockerel separated in a separate area too during the winter. He can see everyone and talk to them, but when there's snow on the ground and they don't want to go out, I haven't let him have free-run. He gets to go out whenever the doors are open and the grass is showing. So far he's doing okay when they're outside.

He definitely doesn't mate every 20 seconds like my SFH boy did :) (He's 8 mos old.)

Between furnace failure, so many other events I have fell way behind, again.. going to try to find where i left off. If you need a direct reply, please PM so I dont miss you! Hope everyone is well.

Question, but I won't be back on for a few days probably to see your answers.

Anyone raise Khaki Campbells? If so, your experience, please.
-Do they really lay as well and prolifically as they say?
-How do you keep their winter home from becoming a nasty mess?
-Do they go outside in the winter or want to stay under shelter?

Welcome to our thread! Feel at home, ask away, any questions you have.

Anyone raise rabbits for meat in the NWI area? My wife and I are starting the discussion but she has never had rabbit. I would like to procure some meat first for her to try. Also would like to pick someone's brain about it.
We have a couple folks that do. I will say there is a difference between wild rabbit and domestic. IF she prefers white meat in chicken, domestic is the way to go. Very similar.

New Member! Wanting To Start My Very Own Flock! I'm currently hatching quail and chicken eggs. Would love ducks eggs if anyone could help!
I am getting a few sporadic Pekin duck eggs.. Most breeds will be laying before april. Welcome to BYC and our thread!

Hello all, I hope your new year is better than ours. We've had a tumultuous turn of events that may end up in my having to give up my flock. The morning of the 1st, my mother in law passed away. She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two weeks before Christmas, and had just started treatment. The lucky thing is that she went instantly, before she even knew it.
Because of this we may have to move to Greenwood, as my father in law cannot afford to keep the house on his own. I have seen that Greenwood has a ordinance against "barnyard fowl", but I've seen through my googling that in 11-13 there was a substantial push to change this ordinance, but I can't find if it's changed or not. I would like to keep my girls, they've been very cathartic for me, and have been great producers. If need be, I'll have to find a home for them, 13 in all. If anyone knows if any things changed in Greenwood, or a direction to look in, I would be very appreciative.
I am so sad to hear about your loss.. Call Greenwoods code enforcement or animal control to discuss. I hope you are able to keep them

Not that I need another frizzled black bantam, but I'm curious about what breed your frizzled cochin is mixed with to produce blue eggs? I am interested in getting a few Silkies closer to spring. The Black Bantam Cochin Frizzle girls (who are practically joined at the hip!) are adored and spoiled—they are the cutest, most endearing miniature chickens I've ever seen!

I am very happy to report that my Bielefelder pullet, Frieda, from @kittydoc
is doing well after eating some black foam pipe insulation and pooping little black dots for almost two weeks. I had taken her to the vet and housed her in the basement with the two frizzle chicks who are now her special buddies. They are a funny combination—a very large "almost a hen" and two tiny frizzled feather dusters!

It was the result of my frizzled cochin roo over my Easter Egger hen. My girl hatched frizzled and of bantam size with a peacomb. She's lovely.

IMO you can never have too many bantams!! Lol!

Thank you guys for you thoughts and concerns. Haven't been on lately, I've been in a depression funk. According to the Greenwood City planning office, the ordinance still stands. My aunt is going to take the majority of my hens, but I'm keeping my girls that I bought as day old chicks. So long as a neighbor doesn't squeal on me, I should be fine. Worst case scenario: they'll go to my aunt too. I think it's crazy that you can buy chicks from Rural King or TSC in Greenwood, but you can't own them

I will be doing all I can to get the ordinance changed.

Especially if they're precious fluffy little Cochin bantams!! :love

So sorry to hear about all of this. :hugs I wish you the best of luck getting that ordinance changed. And in the mean time, fingers crossed that no one tells on you. Nothing helps depression quite like chicken therapy--I know from experience!
