INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello! I'm new to BYC. My husband @patnewk76 and I are just getting back into raising chickens. I had them when I lived in northern Indiana. After moving to east central Indiana when I met my husband, we had a few in a small backyard coop living in town. We now have more space, close to 3 acres, and are starting over.
We have a mix of breeds and a dozen meat chickens. I'm looking forward to getting to know some byc friends!

Lots of Updates.....

Sister:
My sis is home. I was unhappy about the reasoning. (No bed space at the hospital & nursing home rehab center that accepts Medicaid. Since her life was no longer in danger & she was released from ICU, they sent her home.) The hospital ordered a SEPAP that should arrive later this week or early next week. They said to continue to use the O2 in the meantime. (I still find it strange that they didn't loan her one since they kept stating how important it was while she was there.) They gave her a walker & ordered PT at home. My dad will be scheduling dozens of tests. I went to visit yesterday, cooked dinner & helped tidy up. Lots of work to do there because neither can clean & they have lots of "stuff." Of course I feel the same way about my own house. I've been preoccupied lately, & the clutter takes over quickly with 2 kids, 2 dogs, dozens of chicks, & 1 overworked me!


Baby chicks:
Meanwhile, 3 more chicks found homes & left today. The remaining few will be my grow outs. I was orig hoping to keep 3 lav orps & have DD enter them in the fair, but I needed to empty out the brooder. The orps will be spoiled & it makes less work for me now. We'll keep those for a few months & see how they look before making any more decisions. The little blue orp might be a female & I decided to keep her for now. I've always wanted a blue.

Incubator:
Today is day 18 for the next hatch, & about 23 eggs look good .Only 3 of the 10 penciled rocks made it to this point. (They arrived cracked or covered in slime, so any development is amazing) We've got the penciled rocks, 2 EEs & the rest are all orps. Choc cuckoo, lavender, blk/lav split, & the fun Oopsie eggs. (Never know what she'll hatch out!) I emptied the brooder just in time! Cookie decided to go broody last week. I've been unsuccessful at breaking her, so I slid a couple eggs under her. Once the chicks hatch, she'll be put to work caring for the whole batch. She's a bantam, so it's easier to just put her inside the big brooder. Any chicks that can't fit under her, can use the heat pad for warmth. She will make my job easier. The only quirk she has is that she must feel like she's the mom. If I slip chicks under her right away while her other eggs hatch, she adopts them. If they're 3+ days old, she'll attack any outsider chicks. It's not like she can count, but she can always tell when a chick is not hers.

Well with all the busy days, the only recent pics I have are of a Spitz. She/he's 3 weeks old & the "spitz" just grew in.

DD's experiment update:
She got an A on her sci fair project but is continuing the experiment for 4H. This is her 3rd (& likely final) hatch. There are more eggs in the incubator than her experiment. I have no idea how they got in there??

I'm surprised that the farmer's market eggs didn't do as well this time. The ones that "died early" had no real veining but white streaks of bacteria inside. Sometimes a clump. We think they may have developed for a couple days because the eggs did not glow brightly like the clears. The clears just looked like normal eggs when opened. Last night DD & I did my fav part of marking the x where we predict the chick will pip.

I am hesitant to order the one on amazon. Usually those shirts are 100% cotton, not true to size and are uncomfortable. The store I work at makes really soft t-shirts, fit true to size & do not shrink. The owner is willing to work with me on creating a similar design. It will have to be a bit different than the one I posted as it is not his design, he cannot copy it. I'm meeting with him tonight, I'll talk to him then!

haha! I always have to describe it as 'near' South Bend or 'between South Bend and Plymouth', because noone has ever heard of LaPaz.

This is Baby, our RI Red that came to us with an injured eye and has gotten a lot of attention and become quite the cuddly chick.

We let the kids pick out the chicks they wanted so we have several breeds.
The older crew are 2 jersey giants, 2 silver laced and 2 golden laced wyandottes, 4 ameraucanas, 2 black astrolops, 2 RI Reds, 2 Barred Rock.
Then the younger crew are comprised of several RI Reds & Barred Rocks that my husband was given for free. (not planned, the phone call started something like, "You love me right??")
We have a total of 41 chickens right now including the meat chickens. We are working on a larger coop area this week.
