INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@Leahs Mom
So I'm thinking of trying out the deep litter method in my run. I have a few questions.. I've read through some of your old posts about it but I didn't find the answers to my questions.
Would pine shavings work? (I use them for chicks in the brooders & in the nest boxes)
How about mulch that you would find at a garden center/lowes etc (or are these typically treated)?
My dad's good friend owns a tree company, so I know I could get some wood chips from them, but I figured if I already have the pine shavings might as well use those if they will work.

Does the deep litter method smell? Or turning it & adding to it regularly prevents the smell from occurring?

Pepper too has thick legs and looks to be a male. Who did you buy them from? Did the person tell you that they were females?

I got them from a couple on Craigslist. They had quite a few as well as goats and ducklings. I assumed they were being truthful when they told me they were female. I had spoken to lady over the phone and they had several gathered in a box for us to chose from.

There is an ad for two females and a male, they look like a silver and cream female with a lavender male, but I'm not a fan of the price. Still trying to figure out my options since I can either sell them or process them, but I won't leave Java on his own since Starla hasn't shown back up.

I had 3 chocolate males before I called them the 3 musketeers and they didn't fight. They got along perfectly. But if you want more females I have some. Did you find out how she could have gotten out?

My son now wants a dog... One of his own! Claims our 5 year old German Shepherd mix is too old for him and lazy. Does anyone know of any female dogs for sale that aren't extremely priced? We have a 5 year old female German Shepherd mixed with Husky.
Dog Needs:
  • No older then 2 years
  • Can be mixed
  • No small dogs
  • No Pit Bulls
  • Has to be female

We had a good experience with "Petfinder.com" You can type in your preferences & it searches the rescues. You'll get a bunch of photos, their locations, & their shelter contact info. I called the shelters of the dogs we liked & was able to ask our ?s about temperament before going there to see the dog. (Let's face it, you're going to want to adopt a cute young dog, so better make sure there are no major issues BEFORE meeting it. ie- If it likes to play chase or has a strong prey drive, better move on.) Just remember to be very strict about selecting a dog because it's going to be a pet for the next decade or more. The shelter dogs are already fixed, micro-chipped, and up to date on shots. The adoption fee is less than the cost of paying for those. Both of our dogs were already house-broken, had started some obedience training, were living in foster homes with children & other animals, and past the chewing puppy stage. They were about 4-6 months, so still puppies. (We have two great dogs who grew up with our kids. Now they're ages 10 & 11 yrs and have had good lives.)

Today I witnessed another "Trouble" moment that sent me laughing. A spring lav orp pullet must have done something to upset Trouble (our sebright). I heard her angry squeaks coming from around the corner & then saw a giant 8lb orp flapping & running away in fear. Next I saw a tiny Sebright fly & land just in front of the orp. Trouble jumped up to look at the orp eye to eye & stared her down. Yep. Trouble's in charge & she won't let the big dumb girls forget it!

Later in the morning, a squirrel jumped down from a tree & was promptly chased by a black orp. Tyrion (our orig squirrel chaser) was quick on the scene and then the Spitzhauben joined in the chase - because she always wants to help with everything. After a few times around the tree, the dog finally noticed the commotion & charged top speed toward the squirrel. Poor little rodent had to run back up the tree under which 3 chickens & a dog waited.

I don't suppose anyone is looking for young BYMs or other chickens at the moment, but just in case, I'm needing to downsize. Be it due to cold weather, boredom or growth spurts, I'm being eaten out of house and home by all these extra birds. Most are growing cockerels and pullets still and not worth eating yet.

I'm actually wanting chickens! Sadly I'm so far away from you!

They're back......

Either I have all 7 females or some very slow to mature boys!

Tonight: 7.5 weeks (Blue purple & teal are my best chance for males, but not obvious like my past males who had decent comb height by 5 weeks.)

Does anyone want to agree or disagree? I'd love the input. Click below if you want to see more detailed pics.

Three on right (purple, teal, white)
white's parents are from diff line; positive she's female.
teal has the tallest comb - but still not much height for the age
purple has the longest wattles

Parents of my lav chicks (as pullets/cock)
Both genders feather out quickly & get pink wattles, but the males tend to grow combs fast.
