INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got to see my first tornado tonight a little closer than I'd like to! Parts of Pendleton are really torn up. Only lost power for about 6 hours here. Gas leaks and evacuations going on downtown. Several large trees down, roofs damaged. Youngest DD's family is ok, she's near the high school. We had just got home from camping when it hit. We saw debris and rotation but were far enough away we had minimal damage.

Does anyone else think the weather is really off? Glad your ok though.

Been really depressed the last 2 days! I brought home a 5 year old Border Collie Male named Toby on the 25th. We drove 1 hour 30 minutes to pick him up. We didn't get home till midnight that day. Right as we got off the highway and pulled into the gas station down the street from our house, the front driver side tire on my sisters van was flat! We had to air it up quickly and rush home. We live about 2 minutes from the gas station. By the time we got home the tire was flat again. My sister had to be at work at 4am that morning too.
My husband thought he would be helpful and put Toby on a chain to use to bathroom so I didn't have too when I woke up to take my sister to work at 3am. (No we do not keep our dogs on chains, we just didn't want Toby jumping our 4ft temp. fence.) Well the moment my husband walked him outside on the leash to go to the chain, Toby slipped off his collar jumped our 4ft fence and took off. We searched everywhere in the neighborhood for him. It was dark outside, where we live, there is no street lights. Toby is mainly Black and hard to see in the dark. He doesn't have a full white collar like traditional Border Collies. Toby is terrified of any and all noises too. I've been going door to door the past 2 days giving out my information and information on Toby.
The previous owners never had him Microchipped and he isn't wearing a collar now. SO he looks just like a stray! We live right next to two very busy roads too! We just had a crazy storm today with heavy hail, all I can think about is how terrified Toby is right now. All the thunder and lighting scaring him. Only one lady said she saw him at 4 am and tried to catch him but he took off towards the busy road.
I spent all afternoon calling Animal SHelters to report Toby missing.
Aw, I'm so sorry. Every dog owner's worst nightmare. There is hope. A lot of dogs do get found. I hope Toby is safe and you find him.

Oh man! I was getting Hamilton County emergency alerts left and right. They said funnel cloud was seen in Westfield, not far from me. But we just got a little rain. Thunder was distant. We got rain, but it was all calm here. I figured the sirens going off were for other parts of the county. It must have gone straight east right to you.

@jchny2000 You mentioned you have the kind of brooder in this ad:

How much do you love it, and would you have been happy if you drove two hours and paid their price for it? ($170) It looks pretty big.

I've been hatching about 20 eggs per week, so it seems like it would be overkill for that, but I usually combine 2 or 3 hatches together.

Also, does it have to be indoors? I'm not allowed to brood in the garage any more, so I'd have to run an extension cord out to one of my walk in coops. (Which is what I do now for my MHP brooder areas.)

ETA: I'm very curious about how you see inside this to monitor the chicks' wellbeing.

We saw the swirling and the eerie blue color in the upper clouds, lot of debris. Heard the creepy train sounds, we all went indoors into the hallway. All my livestock piled up together too. Both my dogs were very scared. We are in a valley but still had high winds.

Its huge, I will get measurements tomorrow. Overall I do love it mostly...The top is 2 sections that lift or slide off. I have mine in an old office trailer where we store feed, tack etc. If I am brooding in cold weather, I use a large tote and a heat plate in my garage instead.
The good, holds even a gosling or turkey poult plenty of headspace. What you are looking at is a pretty good deal if its working and well maintained. I've had around 25-30 newborn chicks with plenty of room in there. Like you I combine a weekly hatch depending on breed. Its got a big feeder, gravity fed. It has 2 light fixtures inside I use 7 watt(?) I think 1 red and 1 white bulb. I would buy it again its overall much easier than a plastic tote. Its got a wire floor and a poop tray so cleanup is easy.
The bad, mine is older of course and was used, paid about $150 i think. Had heavy year around use before I bought it. The watering system is terrible and falls off or plugs up. I did a makeshift support but it still did not supply enough, chicks clearly were not getting enough water from it. I use the smaller drown free watering lids that fit a mason jar. We later set up an auto waterer with cups. I did have the freak issue of a screw rusting out that held up the heating element and when it fell it killed a few chicks. This unit is 8 years old at least so I would hope the one you are looking at is an improved design. Post and ask more questions if I missed anything.

was snow all threw April last year common? weather is all over the place for a 2-3 year cycle it seems and settles down and I am not including the more common cycles of 2 or so years of real hot either leading or following 2 years of cold (it might also be 1 and 1). the hot and cold switch I remembered switched in the early 80's happening and people saying it never happened before can't convince me I remember it too well.

Maybe because I'm 55 or getting older. This is off weather I'm afraid to put my garden in. I did my tomatoes and the tornado flattened them, Doubt I will have many this year. Peppers are doing well.

We did have a late blizzard mid-April last year. I remember because I was driving home from Michigan. Roads suddenly got bad between Anderson and Noblesville. My daughter went out and made a snow man. In April.
@speckledhen shared this video and I had to re-share it here. You won't regret watching it! :)

When you grow up with chickens...

Sorry I wasn't able to figure out how to embed it here or I would have!
Thank you for the smile.
