INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Day 21 was yesterday for our 4 eggs. The roo is a rumpless double-tufted Araucana and we sat eggs from 3 different hens: Naked neck, Legbar, and Norwegian Jaerhon.

The two Naked necks hatched first. Some people say that Naked necks are an acquired taste, but I swear they're the CUTEST chicks! Both of them that hatched appear to be rumpless and double-tufted. I need to wait a couple of days to examine them thoroughly before I commit 100% to that description. Here's a photo of the first one:

The second Naked neck has essentially a naked neck and face and only the two tufts of feathers coming out the side of her face. I don't have a picture of her when she's dry yet.

Comically, they both have feathers on the front of their neck like an ascot. :lau:lau

The Norwegian hatched and appears to be rumpless, too, but I didn't immediately see any tufting.

I probably said it before, but it's worth saying again. If you ever get a chance to own a Naked Neck hen DO IT! They're like puppies. :love

Adore the NN I miss them! We had some showgirls and several large fowl a while. When Moms health failed I sold them. Really social bird and so unusual!

Ah-hah--that makes sense. Thanks for that insight! Guess I'll have to find a local that has quail and get my tiny egg fix that way.

We have one Norwegian Jaerhon and she's is really small, too. <2 lbs, I'd guess. I've seen her flying around the coopyard in short bursts, but I attributed it to flightiness opposed to bullying. It could very well be she's trying to escape the other birds in the flock.

Interestingly enough, we just hatched an egg from her. An Araucana roo over the Jaerhon hen. I'm excited to see her grow out!

My mom did keep 2 quail indoors as pets. Used a bird cage and collected eggs every day. She adored them and sure were spoiled ladies! If they have a dust bath they become very loving and trust you. We have other things going but I sure plan to keep quail again.

Got my first Black Copper Maran egg today! Also have a few roosters cooling in the fridge. 6 more fellas that are not so nice and going to freezer camp. I love roosters, but they have to be social and take care of our hens.
I'm very picky about what roosters stay. Have to be human social so friends and my grandson is safe. They also need to call their hens to food while free ranging.. growl if there's a hawk or other danger. My boys will call the hens to a safe nestbox too. I keep 6 for the 6 breeds we have.

Does anybody know of a good place in Indiana I can take my turkeys to get butchered? It seems poultry processing is a dying art and I’ve had no luck finding anything. We’re in NWI but willing to travel a bit to find something. Also we only have 6.

Your birds like the peas? Mine have always left them until the last and only eat them if there's nothing else available. I tried plain ground, cooked, sprouted...every way possible and they HATE them and won't even touch them.

:lau Sounds like my husband. :gig

*He grew up eating canned peas. He hated them & couldn't understand why I'd waste time planting peas He finally tried a sugar snap pea pod from the garden & eventually I won him over.
