HI.. Just found the Indiana page.

I'm in Rural West Lafayette.....

This spring is my first with Chickens(or any farm animal for that matter). I have 4 RIR, 3 barred Rocks, 1 australorp(sp?) and 2 that I am not sure yet, they are turning white though.

Chicks are about 4-5 weeks old. I am hoping most are pullets but not real sure at this point. I think I have at least 5 pullets and at least 2 cockerels.

I just ordered 15 cornish crosses from a local store. Should hav in two weeks. Anyone else tried broilers? Do they really taste good?(My BIL had some RIR that they couldn't eat once upon a time)...

Anyway, hello to all the hoosiers..err... a... Boilermakers on here....

My family has tried broilers twice without much luck...but I think the results would have been MUCH different if we'd had them on pasture. I'm willing to try them again-on pasture-in the future.
BTW, my brothers ( who aren't crazy about chickens aside from eating them ) are avid boilermaker fans so I'm for Purdue. Besides, I like the school better!!

Welcome Joe, Great more Hoosiers . Sounds like you are pretty close to a few members here. I am about 45 min. from Lafayette. I have a nice little flock but have no desire for broilers. I would just make pets out of them anyway. LOL
Joe you need to check out the Chicken Stock thread on the BYC-EZ board. There are a bunch of us going in May.

Hi,
We're in SW Indiana just west of Evansville. We have a small farm with lots of characters!
58 hens total and 5 roosters. You name it we probably have 1, no bantams except our roo Motorcycle (son named him-he's black like grandpas motorcycle!) He's a handsome black silkie. We call him the babysitter, when a mama leaves her nest he sits for her while she's away! And he loves the babies!

We have 3 guineas, 4 goats, a dog, some cats, 5 children and me and my husband. We welcome all visitors and most orphans!
Blessings,
Amy

Hello,

I am from Gosport, IN. I have 25 chicks just over two months old (some breeds still a mystery) the others are Blue and Buff Cochin, Salmon Faverolle, Buff Laced wyandotte, all are rare/very rare breeds according to MM. I also have 6 Guineas, 1 White Silky Roo, a Roo a neighbor gave me, 4 - 4 week old silky chicks, and 5 4 week old Royal Palm turkeys. I won't get to go to chicken stock as my horse ran over me and I have broken ribs as well as various other injuries. Anyway I love this site !

I actually live in southern Illinois but I'm from southern Indiana - and I mean the extreme southern part Mt Vernon, In. I wanted to put both areas as my home because I'm in southern Indiana at least two times a month at my family's places.

We had 6 hens and 2 roos. All died within 2-3 years.

One to the cold weather and the rest (except one roo) to West Nile. Purdue diagnosed that. They said they were more likely to not be able to fight it because of their size and breed. We had a couple of horses get sick in our area as well during that time. We had one roo survive for 3 years and he seemed to have died from the heat.
