Would a 4 foot long rabbit cage be appropriate for keeping an indoor pet call duck? Is it okay if the call duck stays there with just a bowl of food and water? I don't want too much water to splash on the surrounding areas so I am unable to provide a tray of water. And would newspapers be a good bedding?

Ducks need room to roam and water to play in like a small swimming pool, so keeping a duck as a pet inside isn't feasible unless its swimming in the bathtub everyday. And 4 feet is too small.

So let me get this straight: It is okay to keep a rabbit in a rabbit cage that is four feet long, but a smaller animal such as a call duck cannot be kept in the same type of cage? I will have water and food available for the duck and I plan to have him perch on my shoulder wearing a diaper when I am home.

No, this would not be appropriate, for several reasons.

First off, they cannot be kept as singles. You would need at least two ducks. Second, that is way too small, they need to be able to roam around. Third, they need a pool, or at the very least something to dunk their full heads in which will result in water everywhere.

I don't think a duck is the right pet for you.

Different animals, different needs.

1) Is there a federal law prohibiting keeping a single pet call duck?

2) The cage is spacious. Four feet long!

3) I will provide a deep water cup so the duck can submerge their heads into.

Unfortunately that will not be enough room for your call duck. Ducks need lots of space to explore and definitely need, at the very least, a deep container of water to dunk their heads. Preferably, they would have a large container or pool in which they could float/swim.

I'm not entirely sure (maybe someone else can weigh in on this) but I remember reading that most ducks will be very unhappy in a diaper and that it is usually only recommended in short-term situations. Maybe someone else has tried it with good results, though.

Ducks are really messy and need a lot of water and space, which is why most people don't keep them as indoor pets. I wish all of ours could come inside with us!! But the reality is that they'd be depressed inside, being limited in their space, and they need so much water and poop all over the place... a big headache for us!
