Indoor Chickens/Garage Chickens

I don’t get it ? So you can have chickens ? You’d never be able to get away with hiding chickens , have you heard the “ laying song” my coop is far away from my house and I hear them in my house.

Not a good idea at all , not to mention the being a bad example to kids someday ....

The problem is the coop restrictions. 100 feet from the property line is in my garage.

HOA overrides city/county ordinances.

You already have the chicks and said you have a backup plan, so what will probably happen is keep the chickens until someone in the neighborhood hears them and then you have to rehome them. Keep in mind a hen's song can carry quite a distance, I can hear my loudest hen about 1/4 mile away on a quiet day. I've figured out which lots have chickens in my immediate area based on sound alone.

Main issue with keeping them in a garage is ventilation and chicken dander, which is oily and sticks to things.

Thanks again everyone! I appreciate all of the opinions about this. Again, I have raised chickens for 25 years; just never in an area where there were so many restrictions. Chickens in diapers is a norm for us. They are our pets. I make them myself. I have seen a bunch of posts about how to do this successfully and I am super excited! Thanks again for all the tips and encouraging messages. Happy to be a part of the flock and will update as we progress.

Well, as it seems you are moving forward with this, you could start putting it out that you have a new parrot, that squawks like a chicken. No rules against parrots, or are there? I'm glad you have a backup plan, anyway.

IF you want dust everywhere...go ahead. Ask me how I know. LOL! My coop will be finished in the next day or so and I'll never be so glad to move those birds outside. NEVER AGAIN!!!

It is the city ordinance.

Unfortunately your HOA has the stricter rule and you can’t stand on city rule. Sorry! I think you now have what can happen, good to have a backup plan. When I bought my first house the one condition was - no HOA or gated community. That was long before chickens.... I would probably always be in trouble Good luck!

Interesting dilemma. I personally would not do it, but have some suggestions: Figure out some way to soundproof the garage with special panels or the like; if there is natural light coming in through windows (the garage door maybe), strategically place mirrors in order to maximize daylight without having to leave lights on all the time.

I have some follow up questions for you:
1) How many direct neighbors do you have? Do you know them and are they active in the HOA?
2) How big is your back yard and is it entirely fenced? If it is, is it privacy fencing and how tall is it?
3) About how far away from your fence line are your neighbors' houses?
