Indoor Coop?

I have my chickens in my garage, I set up a kennel ( outside dog run ) and thats where they stay at night and they free range during the day. I have straw down on the floor. In the morning when I let them out I real quickly pick up there poop from under the roost. I put the boxes out on the side of the house and that where they lay there eggs. I was forced to having to do this because my coop was crushed in a storm a couple weeks ago, I had soaked chickens and chicks spread out all over the yard. Having them in the garage has been nice I don't have to worry about drafts, rain or severe weather.

As I said I probably wont end up with that many chickens, at max it would be 29 and thats only if all my eggs hatch.

I figure I am just going to have to make sure to keep up on the cleaning, and air the basement out allot. If possible I would probably move some of the chickens to the outside coop when they feather out. I can TRY out and see how they do in the basment and if it doesn't work oh well, I have a mess to pick up.

When I had my chicks in the house they were in a playpen for a brooder.I paid more for shavings that was less dusty.I usaully only had 6 each time,and they got booted to the garage once the smell got too intense. I cleaned daily,but it still smelled.

I once moved my 3 older hens into a garage side room.Made a wall of tote boxes to limit where they went.I used swheat scoop cat litter,but worried they were eating it,so I switched to pine savings.I prefer the cat litter!It was sooo easy to clean up droppings. I scooped daily and it was ok,but then I needed the room for the cats(one was peeing on the floor inside).

I think I would opt for walling off part of the garage before having that many in the house.It might work out so give it a try. I was reading about rice hulls as bedding.Might be an option.I would want to keep chicks inside too.

And I'll tell you those chicken poops that were runny stuck like cement. I am still finding splats on the garage room walls.How do hens poop up high on a wall???

A couple of winters ago, I raised 6 chicks in my basement. I set up a 3 foot fence, playpen style, and had wood chips down on the floor, then switched to straw. I loved having them so close but I was really happy to move them them outside when the weather warmed up after 3 months hauling straw up and down the stairs. I cleaned out the bedding about once a week to keep the odor down, but boy, the dust. They are 6 of the sweetest birds I have, but spent a lot of time with them everyday.

I had to have my washer repaired while they were down there. That was so funny. The repairman came down the stairs and saw my chickens, and the look on his face was priceless.

I am sure he thought I was crazy!

I have raised 6 chicks and 6 ducklings in my basement before until they where old enough to go outside. I think they were 2 - 3 months old the ducks were younger and I never really noticed any dust, maybe I wasn't paying attention

I watched that "Hoarders" show earlier this week and a woman had 57 small (parakeets, etc.) birds in her home... they talked about the health issues for both the people and the birds having birds inside...it was not good actually pretty nasty with all the "chicken dander/dust"...
