Infected sinus

It was sort of hard to tell if her good eye is ok or not because she isn’t really scared of me so I walked up to her and waved me hand in front of it and she blinked, and it seems to be functioning as a normal eye. I will try the wet feed, and scrambled eggs. And no, I have not checked her beak. If you don’t mind, could you show me how to, just to make sure she doesn’t have any lesions or cankers? Thank you so much I am really grateful for your help.

I have been trying to feed her, and tried the wet/soupy feed, but she still wont eat it, even when I put her beak in it. Do you have any strategies to get your chickens to eat?

Just make sure that she is drinking water. That is most important. Sick birds don’t drink well, and she should be offered food and water up to her beak or dripped on the side of her beak several times a day.

Ok thank you! Yes she is definitely drinking and getting enough water. I am just worried because she hasn’t really eaten anything in three days.

If you could hold her for 10 minutes with a warm wet washcloth over the eye, that might soften the material on the eye, since it looks like dried crusty eye drainage. Doe she sneeze or sound congested? I would be inclined to treat her with Tylosin in case she has MG. Chickens with MG can also be lethargic, but she may be having trouble seeing the food. Thank you so much for the suggestion about the wet washcloth! I held it on her eye and after about a minute or so, the yucky yellowish film came right off! (Pictures included below) I don’t know if this is just a coincidence but right after it came off she started walking a little faster! do you have any other suggestions as to how I could get her eye back to normal? The only bad news about that is that I am no 99.99% sure she is blind in that eye. It is grey and milky, and I tried to test her eyes with a flash photo, and on her good eye, she blinked in response to the flash, but not on her bad eye. However, on a positive note, she seems a little more alive, awake and in tune with what is going on around her. She still won’t eat though. Any strategies on getting her to eat?

Glad it was successful. She might have had an infection or a peck to the eye that has caused rhe cloudiness. It does sound like she might have lost sight. I would continue to clean the eye with saline eye wash or the warm water and cloth. Apply antibiotic ointment twice a day after cleaning.

Thank you, I will do that! She still wont eat...do you have any other strategies I could try?

I have had success mixing a small amount of chicken feed with water into a mash and holding it up to their beaks. Scrambled egg, canned cat food or tuna are good to alternate in that mash.

Ok! I tried the wet food yesterday and I put her beak in it and held it up to her but she still won't eat. I guess there just isn't anything else I can do? I will try the scrambled eggs, as we don't have cat food or tun.

You can only do so much, but trying again later might help. Tapping the bowl or dropping a few pieces of crumble on top may get her intersted. How does her crop feel? She may not have an appetite. Sometimes giving a couple of drops of chick vitamins orally might help appetite.
