Hi! My 9 week old hen Lolo developed a swollen eye and eyelid about a week ago. (Pictures included below) it has been about a week, and none of the other chickens have gotten it, so I don’t think it’s contagious. My dad thinks it is a swollen sinus, but I just thought I would get anyone else’s ideas or suggestions just in case there is something else I could do. Her eyelid and just above the swollen eye used to be covered in red bumps so I put some antibiotic ointment on there every night for a couple nights and it is no longer red and bumpy, and the swelling seems to have gone down a little, but now there seems to be an excess film of antibiotic ointment over her eye, and stuff has started getting caught in it. She has recently been quite lathargic and just walking around slowly and stands, and usually sleeps standing up. She finally drank water last night, after a couple of days, and again this morning, but she still isn’t eating. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please respond and let me know!

@Eggcessive

@mmikchicken does she blink the eye? Does it react to light?
Any chance you took pictures when it was covered in red bumps?
I'm leaning toward the eye is damaged some how. I wonder if the part sticking out is the nictitating eye lid or part of it. The eye looks blind to me, but I would be wrong.

The lethargy is very concerning. If she's not been drinking or eating, then see if you can get her hydrated first, then offer some wet mushy feed. She may not be seeing well and is feeling insecure. Maybe put her in a crate (dog kennel?) inside the coop with her own food/water.

Thank you so much for your input! I am so sorry, I didn’t take any pictures of the eye with the red bumps. She doesn’t blink the eye regularly, but she will sometimes close it when she sleeps. I think you are right about that eye being blind, just based on how she has been acting. Do you think the other eye is blind too? I included a picture of the other eye in my original post, and my untrained eye thinks it looks pretty normal. I will try some wet food. My whole flock of chickens are quite sweet and they have continued to snuggle with her when they go to sleep as well as throughout the day. She doesn’t seem too insecure as she is reacting to me in a similar way, but when I’m not around her she is, as I said before quite lathargic. I was thinking I would keep her with her friends unless they start attacking her, because they seem to make her happy. But if you think I should separate her I definitely will. Thank you for your suggestions and let me know what you think!

The other eye from what I can see looks o.k. Does she react on that side to your hand?

If the others aren't picking at her, then she likely will be happier with them, but you will need to make sure she's drinking - encourage her to drink and eat several times a day.

I haven’t

I haven’t tested

I haven’t tested her good eye yet but I will do that and let you know if she reacts or not. She is defintely drinking, but I haven’t been able to get her to eat. I have tried to sort of out her beak in the food or hold it up to her but she hasn’t eaten it yet. Do you have any suggestions? Would the wet food be easier to get her to eat? Or could I put food in her water so when she drinks she also gets some food? Let me know, and thank you for all your help!

Try some wet soupy feed.
Scrambled egg may entice her too.

Have you looked inside her beak to see if there are any lesions or canker?
It was sort of hard to tell if her good eye is ok or not because she isn’t really scared of me so I walked up to her and waved me hand in front of it and she blinked, and it seems to be functioning as a normal eye. I will try the wet feed, and scrambled eggs. And no, I have not checked her beak. If you don’t mind, could you show me how to, just to make sure she doesn’t have any lesions or cankers? Thank you so much I am really grateful for your help.

If you could hold her for 10 minutes with a warm wet washcloth over the eye, that might soften the material on the eye, since it looks like dried crusty eye drainage. Doe she sneeze or sound congested? I would be inclined to treat her with Tylosin in case she has MG. Chickens with MG can also be lethargic, but she may be having trouble seeing the food. Here is where you may find Tylosin:

Thank you! I will definitely hold that washcloth over her eye, and if that doesn't work will think about the Tylosin. She isn't sneezing or sound congested, she sounds and breathes normal, she just is lethargic and isn't moving much, and when she does, she walks very slowly.
