Thank you to everyone that added to this thread. I have a 1 year old Rhode Island Red Roo named SaberRoo. He had a broken toe nail and it was infected. Being a new bird mom I didn't know what to do. I soaked it in hydrogen peroxide a couple of times and it didn't help. I also have a friend that is a vet so I asked her first but she stated "I don't know anything about birds. I just work on cats, dogs etc but you need to get the infection out" That is when I came here to see what I could find. Terri because of your bravery and everyone elses encouragement I got the razor, iodine, neo, vet wrap etc and wrapped poor SaberRoo in a towel and took care of his toe. When I began working i realized his toenail was upside down. When I took the scab off the nail came with it. Poor guy! But after reading this thread I am confident that he is going to be ok. After I got him wrapped and gave him a personal snack while still in the house. I took him back to the coop and he hopped right down and joined the others in having dinner. I will check him tonight and change the dressing on Wednesday. Thanks again for this thread!

I was winging this I had a rooster with an infected swollen toe I looked and saw the whitest area a type of bubble formed on the lower side of his middle toe I took a sharp razor cleaned and burned it for any possible germs and I figured I would puncture the white part and the pus would ooze out and give him relief, a small bit of blood came and then I saw the white stuff was rubberish not oozing and i figured cut a bit more and I ended up pulling this rubber blob out. AFTER this I said what if my instincts are way off and I am harming him! So I came to check here

I am so glad you made this comment as I want to open the whole bottom part of his toe and feel I have no other way to save him he walks and eats and drinks and even fusses with the other rooster no real fighting just some flapping and a fly by there are more then enough hens for the 2 and they were hatched together. He is also very happy to breed to his hens so I am sure he is not at deaths door but he is a bird so that can change fast.

My question is the soak in epsom salts and sugar is there a recipie for this? I was gonna pack it with honey
