Infested with FLIES!!!!

Hi, I just found this thread and thought you might like my fly control ideas!

I live in an area that has farms, farms and more farms. Flies are everywhere in the area, especially in the spring, and during wet weather. So I devised a homemade fly trap that really works and I have been using it for 15 years succesfully.

First: Flies love manure and dead stuff! They can find it almost instantly.
Second: You have to stay on top of the problem. They breed quickly, and they travel for miles.
Third: You cannot control what your neighbors do with their pet waste, garbage, etc.

That being said, you need to start early in the spring, by making at least 2 or three of these traps.
I make mine about a week or two before the last frost.

To make the trap, get an empty 2 liter soda bottle,
fill it 1/3 with water, 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwasing soap, and 1/4 cup of
any of the following: manure ( (their favorite) I put doggie poo in mine),

tuna fish, canned cat food, spoiled meat etc.
(you get the idea).
Make a hanger for it from a wire coat hanger and hang them in any inconspicuous place around your farm.

Don't hang it close to your house, (they get pretty stanky)

I usually hang one about 20 feet from the barn about 4 feet up in an old apple tree. I hang one on the other side of my property, and the other one I put near the ground near a pear tree.

I also pick up my doggies waste every day or 2 and solarize it in a covered 5 gallon bucket to which I add grass clippings and DE.
This keeps the flies interested in the traps. They fly in the trap and drown.

I use flea drops on my horses and dogs, to repel flies and mosquitos.
I am sorry for the length of this post, but I have had real success with my traps and thought some of you might be interested as well.
In the winter, I lay the traps on their sides to dry out, put a lid on them and send them to the dump. I also make traps for yellow jackets the same way, just different bait. (Apple juice, dishwashing soap, and a piece of leftover fried chicken scraps.)

Too many flies means you have too few ducks. Get some Muscovies. Clip or pinion their wings to keep them close to home. They are world champion fly eaters. They are also the most tasty duck you can eat. They also will incubate anything you put under them.

While it's too late to do it this year, next year put up some purple martin and blue bird houses. My boss uses fly predators, I use birds. She has 5 horses on several acres, I do self care of my horses, and there's a total of 9 horses where mine are on way less acreage. I see way less flies where I am than she has.

I agree with you on the Muscovies!
I had a very frustrating fly problem this summer, early in the season. My neighbor keeps his trash cans next to the fence where my chicken yard is, and the flies were crazy! All over the ground, air, coop, etc. I hung sticky traps by the fence and they worked very well- so well, that they filled up fast...and the flies continued.

Now I use those sticky traps and Muscovy power!
They are fun to watch when they catch the flies, and they brought the numbers WAY down. Love my muscovies.

The best sticky fly trap I ever found was this one:

I bought them at TSC in two packs.

These are all such great ideas! I added more fly traps and am probably going to try to make another. The one that I made already failed miserably

Urban small holding is not as romantic as I had imagined!

So wish that I could have a duck, but it's one of the animals listed in our HA that we can't own. Maybe I could rent one for a few days! I know that you can rent goats to come and clear property! Wish I could rent ducks!

I am VERY happy to report that we have turned a MAJOR corner in the fly saga!! And NOOOOOOOO harmful chemicals!

The 1 - 2 punch to decimate the population was the Fly Stik Junior by Starbar. This is in addition to food grade DE on fresh poop and in food, oats in food to dry out poop, stall dry in coop, 3 rescue fly traps and 3 Fly Stik Juniors around the run.

The key for the sticks to work is that they were place low, leaning against the run, and filled within an hour! It's amazing! The sticks also aren't attracting the flies from other areas (like the stinky water traps do).

What is amazing is that for 2 weeks, we have been battling flies in the house (our yard is small) because every time we went outside they would flood in. Since last night, we have been in and out of our door a million times, and NO FLIES!!!

I'm headed to the store to get more of these traps.

So, what I have learned if you are infested with flies:

Food grade DE - in run, on fresh poop and in food, not a huge difference for me, but any helped.
Oats in food to keep poop dry
Rescue Fly traps
Stall dry in coop
Raking run everyday
keeping poop dry
Sealing compost in closed barrel system
and the major improvement came from:
Fly Stik Juniors! 3-4 strategically placed!

Thanks so much for all of great tips and hints. I don't feel so defeated and we'll keep the hens!

Victor Flying Insect Spray (mint oil) killed the flies residual flies (just a few left after the stiks) and Orange Guard Insect Spray. It takes them a minute or two to die, but they do die:)

Very excited - we have won the war of the flies!
