I have a BA hen hatched last June who started laying at 6 mo. and has never laid more than once a week. She is on layer pellets, 14 hrs light (mild weather here in CA). Her flock-mate lays every day. Will she have to go in the stockpot?
Or is there any hope she will lay more frequently.

I would hold out until the spring and see what she does!

Pullets may lay anywhere between 1 egg and 12 or more, in a clutch. These eggs arrive about 1 day apart.

She will then take a break which, for production hens, may be unnoticeable. Then she begins to lay another clutch.

If you have a hen that is genetically programmed to lay only 1 egg as a clutch and then take several weeks off - you will never see many eggs.

If there are health or nutritional reasons for the low number of eggs, she may have higher production sometime in the future. Chickens may also have hormonal deficiencies at this time of year, even in warmer parts of the country.

Good Luck

Steve
