She may not have wanted to react in front of you; different people handle emotions differently, and under different circumstances. I know if I discovered a dead bird while someone I did not know well was there, I would not react at all the same as if I found it when alone. I am fairly guarded in the emotions I will publically display as compared with when I am alone or with those to whom I am close.
I guess my ultimate question is how tightly the birds were caged, and whether they are kept that way all the time, or on occasion. When I have someone coming to see birds, I usually pen all my birds, and sometimes the pens are more packed than I would prefer, but that is easier than trying to catch the one bird who does not want tp be caught. Most of the time some birds are ranging while others are penned. And they all get their turn outside in the grass--just not all at once.
If they are in breeding pens, they need room to breed. They could also be in show cages, being cage trained. A question I would ask you is whether the birds appeared to be healthy and well fed? Were they reasonably clean?
