Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone can please give me some advice. After my little lady went missing over night she was found hanging upside down with her leg stuck in a crevice of a post. Poor little think is recovering ok in a dark box but I am concerned about her leg and foot. It is now dark grey and her foot has curled in. I am thinking this may be due to lack of circulation for some time? Thoughts? It is summer and warm so not frost bite. This has just happened today. She has had pain killers. Any advice on how best to mend this foot?

I would try soaking her feet in warm epsom salt water for about 10 minutes, a couple of times per day. That might make it feel better too and improve her mobility a little bit. I'd have her minimally on vitamin water, but if you have B-Complex, I'd give her half of one of those. It would help her heal her possibly injured bones and muscles.

Thank you! This sounds good. I will try this. It seems to be improving and she stood on it using strength in her foot to wrap around my hand. Not what I was wanting her to try but a good sign. Fingers crossed all will be ok soon

The dark colour can be bc is bruised. Massage would hurt. If nothing is broken she just needs time and comfort to heal.

Give her a comfy place to rest with good food (chick pellets / wet mash) and fresh water nearby.

I had an injured chicken last August. I brought her home from the neighbours who found her looking miserable. She couldn’t even lay down (probably a hip injury) and stood night and day in a nestbox. She needed several weeks to heal and gradually became more mobile. It took a few months to heal completely but is moving and looking great again now.

Thank you that is comforting. She is doing really well happily sitting and pecking away at her food chirping. She is holding her leg close today but that is understandable. I am concerned about her claws being curled in. I was thinking of maybe making a little cardboard pad to stretch them back out if they don’t uncurl in a few days or a week? Thoughts? They aren’t broken and they are easily moveable. Might just need some time for the muscles and tendons to recover

I wouldn’t interfere. Some people find it hard to do ‘nothing’. But all she might need now is healthy food and rest.

Visits from her flock mates are good for her mental well being, if they respect her.

Vitamins rich food is: grass (tiny cuttings), pieces of fruit and herbs. If she needs calcium for her bones, crushed egg shells are a good source. Just put some of it in a bowl beside her if she is able to eat from it. She takes what her body needs. Trust your chicken in knowing whats best.
If you give those along with wet chick feed, and fresh water she should be okay.

Ok sounds good. I’ll bring her sisters up tomorrow. I was concerned she might be a bit lonely and scared without her sisters. Thanks again. This is all very new to me. Only a couple of weeks in!

Keeping chickens isn’t very easy. I had to learn a lot in the first few years.

Great you ask help to make a good choice. But always keep following your own instincts too. If something people advise you to do, feels wrong, don’t follow. You are the one that knows your chickens best, sees and hears most.
