Just returned a chick to its mother, but mother got defensive. Tried to attack my hand but got chick instead and stripped skin from its neck. Is there anything that can be done? Could it recover?

It's one week old (picture taken just before incident)

Well, what a surprise. Last night it looked really bad, and I thought it would die overnight. This morning it has recovered a bit and the wound has dried. We've been putting anti-septic on it.

If it's not a male we'll call it Nettle, which is similar to Ngetal, which apparently means wound.

Just keep an eye on mama - chickens can't resist a wound, they keep pecking at it. If you see her doing that please rescue the chick and raise him in a brooder instead. It doesn't take much for a chicken to turn to cannibalism, even if it's their own chick.

Oh the other side of the coin, chicks and chickens generally have very good recuperative powers- and survive even gruesome predator attacks.

Thanks!
She doesn't seem inclined to peck at it, so hoping that continues, but I'll keep an eye on them.

A few years ago we had a chick that lost some skin around it torso, not sure from what, perhaps a rat. We were surprised it survived! I'm surprised I saw this one alive this morning, and looking stronger.
