Injured dove - need help, please!

No problem. I love the way you read it. Like my son says, call me anything but hairball. I'll look into the ointment you're suggesting. Thanks so much for the info regarding plantain. I need to do some reading now!

I'd love to share recipes and bet you have a few, believer? I'm not fancy--and not Christian either, but I respect all who respect me and mine, and I welcome information on herbs wherever I can find it. I've got to go cook dinner now for my partner and kids. Will check back later!

Good morning to my new friends!

I've got more questions if you don't mind! This morning the little dove was standing in the back of the carrier. Only one small drop of blood evident on the towel, but ti was really too dark to tell for sure (didn't want to mess with her when its real bright). Anyway, after putting ointment on her wound and putting her back into the carrier she flapped against the insides of the carrier enough to send feathers floating towards the opening. I recovered the carrier and she stopped. Our temps should get above freezing by noon today, low then 23 with wind chill of 18 tonight. Tomorrow forecast is 42/27, no rain due till Mon.

Do you all think I should put her outside when it warms up? I'm afraid she'll do herself more harm staying in the carrier.

Thanks again (and again!!!)

Eggs me on - I've got lots of recipes and ideas. Any particular type you're looking for?

I started using herbs on my family in 1992 and have hardly had to do anything else. They've kept people alive and healthy for many years, animals too. According to the Poison Control Center, there's thousands of calls every year regarding overdoses/reactions to tylenol/aspirin, but not a single one about herbs! What does that tell ya?

Plantain is easily identified, edible, there's nothing in my neck of the woods that looks enough like it to be mistaken for it. I've put handfuls into the blender with water and then soaked a cloth to use as a poultice. You can put that into the fridge for later use and of course the cold makes it even better. But I've also just picked a leaf, pinched off the stem and rolled it in my hands till it gets rather wet and put that on a bug bite, bee sting, welt, swelling - it works that well!

And it grows most everywhere. The plants in our horse pasture are huge compared to the lawn. B/c it's so common, you can find it on a moments notice just about anywhere there's a grassy spot so it's readily available, except in winter.

here's a link to a site with a good picture and info about it, with links to others.

If you had a bird cage you could use that instead. You could keep it covered with a towel to keep it darker for her. Has she eaten anything or drank and water?

I myself wouldn't put it outside unprotected though. But I am a constant worrier and obsess over these kinds of things.

Wish you loads of luck and this dove is very lucky

I'll be back later to look on the link you put up. Unless the dove is injured seriously I would let it go after it has warmed up a bit. It probably has a mate thats worried sick.

Hey, believer! So sorry. A friend passed so I've been offline for a few days attending to my heart. I am very interested in herbs and sure appreciate your putting that link on about plantain. I've yet to look at it but will soon. I'm also going to look into the ointment you suggested and pass it on if I can find it. How's that little dove???

Just about to turn computer off when the last message came thru.

I released dovie Sunday afternoon - when I finally got a good look at her that morning, she had scraped the feathers off her head banging against the top of the cat carrier when she'd flap around. It seemed that I wasn't doing her much good if what I was doing was causing more injury while trying to help with the initial wound. The closest rehabber wasn't able to take her for a few days, and was a 1.5 hour drive away. I figured that if she'd bloodied herself while the cage was sitting still in a quiet warm room, what would happen in a noisy loud car?

Sun I set the carrier outside and let her get accustomed to the change in temps for an hour. Then opened the door. She hopped out and sat on the porch for about 5 min, then flew off about a 1000 yards to a big oak tree. It was 45 degrees out and the high was 40 that night!!! I'm praying that she'll make it now. Her chest would looked like it was starting to get feathers already! Maybe that comfrey helped?

Thanks for asking! Lotsa luck with the herbal remedies Egg me on! They're wonderful!

Oh gosh, forgot to say how sorry I am that you lost a friend! Hope you're feeling better now! Blessings - Pam
