Hello. This morning when I opened the hens coops I saw one of my 8 month old Barred Rock hens still sitting on her perch. I went in and grabbed her and found that one of her legs has a wound by the elbow joint. Her foot is cool to the touch and a little swollen and redish. I brought her in and cleaned it and fed her some scrambled eggs and gave her water. How worried should I be that the leg is cool to the touch? She is such a beautiful hen I dont know how else to help her.

I don't know if it's broken. Im not sure how to tell if it is. I put her outside for a while to be in the sun and she was jumping on one foot and then resting.

Over the weekend the leg that was cold has become warm and swollen. I have put her on antibiotics. What else should I do? Anyone?

How do you think she got wounded? Could a predator have injured her? Could she have gotten caught on a piece of metal or wood somewhere? Can you possibly get this bird to an avian vet so that it can be determined whether there is a break or dislocation? (p.s. she may also need some pain relief - 1 baby aspirin [no substitutes] crushed in cup of water, changed out at least once a day)

Thanks jj I will give her the asprin. She could have been caught in wire, but I think it was a coyote. The girls were very upset the day before I found her. We have a pack that has been around more in the last few weeks. The wound looks like a puncture.
