Hi I’ve got a 10wk old drake who was attacked by my dog last Sat. He’s doing okay, been on antibiotics until yesterday. Big chunk taken out of the muscles betw his wing and leg in left side. So his the bottom part of his wing is dangling and he can only just stand on his leg. His wound is healing well.

He’s bright and happy. Eating/drinking well. I give him daily warm water baths to help his leg.

The vet I took him to wasn’t very good with ducks.

My duck is up and about now. Sleeps inside the house with us at night and has returned to his flock during the day.

He tries to keep up with the others and is learning to rely on his good leg. His injured wing is strapped. It appears not broken - just loss of muscle/nerves.

I’m worried about him dragging his foot. It’s all curled up and I’m worried he’ll hurt it as he drags it. The vet doesn’t know if he’ll regain power in it.

Can anyone please give me some tips on how to help his dragging foot? I try to straighten it in his warm bath.

Thx heaps

Apologies for graphic nature. Healing well now.

Thanks I brought him back inside with me - where he’s kept clean, away from flies and confined. He has a happy space near the window on my bench where he can see out and feel the breeze. I take him outside on the grass every day and he eats with the others now. I make sure he’s safe. He’s much more gentle now, let’s me stroke him anywhere round his face gently. I can even stroke him to sleep now. I have him with me all day long.

A shoe can be made to help keep his foot flat. you can use card board or plastic just make sure to wrap either with tape to help with sharp edges[plastic] Butter containers work well lay foot on the piece of card board or plastic to out line then cut to shape of foot place foot on top and use vet wrap to tape the foot to the plastic.

Sure hope he is up and running with the flock soon.

Welcome to BYC.

The shoe sounds great thx. I’ll get onto it. His wing is dragging less, prob coz he’s leaning on his good side more and it’s lifting up. I might make him a sling like a human one instead of a bandage so I can free up his good wing
