Thanks! I realised again how far removed human medicine is from animal medicine. I'm lucky enough to have a vet friend who was very free with her advice.

Oh, and how! I never knew I would learn so much so quickly!

We got just the two hens- Muriel the formidable Buff Orpington and the Legbar Pullet and I thought that this chicken-keeping was so easy. Then came the crisis with Chickadee and suddenly I learnt to be a "vet", run a chook ICU, calculate fluids for chickens figure out chicken rehab and socialisation.

Tremendous fun!

Chickadee laid her first egg today. It's almost exactly a month since she was injured.

What an egg-song she let rip too!

For those that want to see how worthwhile treatment of even serious and extensive skin-loss injuries can be I am posting this pic taken today.

Chickadee has full and normal movement, lays eggs every second day, comes when called and will happily sit in a lap for a while. She's a bit dusty from her spa visit in the garden!

I was an absolute newbie at chickens when she got injured. BYC was an absolute godsend. Great resource!
