Yesterday afternoon I noticed one of my Araucana hens was egg bound, when I tried to get my finger between the egg and the vent it went back into the vent. I tried to extract it for about 2 hours with no luck. Around 8:40 this morning I was finally able to extract the egg with the help of a friend who helped position the egg so we could push it through the vent. I am worried that in my attempts to remove the egg I may have pushed it into my hen’s large intestine. Lubricant and gloves hands where used. The hen is visibly sore from having the large egg extracted and is standing for long periods of time without moving. I got her to drink water mixed with nutridrench, but she hasn’t eaten since the egg was removed this morning. It appears that there is some internal something hanging out of her vent, she is in no mood for it to be put back inside her and it doesn’t seem to be causing a problem. She does not appear to have a prolapse thank God! She hasn’t made a poop since the egg was removed, but some urea and poop bird have dropped from her butt. I applied betadine the best I could to her vent area although her butt feathers seem to have blocked a lot of the betadine from getting her vent. I have her in a guinea pig cage in my room for the time being. My plan is to reintroduce her to the flock once she seems to be back to her normal self. Is there anything else I should be doing for my sweet girl?
Cheers,
Aryeh

I'm so sorry.
Can you get a picture of what is hanging out of her vent?

Is this a first with her or has she had laying issues before?
This is a first with her and God willing the last. Although I’m pretty sure she’s the one who laid the 2 fairy eggs I’ve found in the past month.

How old is she and what do you feed?

She is 1.5 years old. She is fed all flock feed with crushed oyster shell mixed in. The egg that was stuck was a regular egg.
Possibly pertinent; Passover ended last Thursday. The chickens were fed wild bird seed, vegetables, grasses, and soaked matzah (kind of a cracker) because I can’t feed them their feed over Passover.

Oh.

If I had to guess I would say she's having trouble because of what she ate. Can you get some calcium supplements in her?

Do you have to take away her regular food often or is it just once a year?

Thankfully it’s just once a year. It pains me so to see my chickens so unhappy.
The whole flock has been back on their feed since last Friday. I can put some crushed oyster shell in her feed and see if she eats it.
