Sevin dust and clean their coop. Don't worry too much. Poultry crawlies are very common. Lice doesn't cause as many issues as mites (which don't live on the body, but come out at night to feed - not talking northern fowl mite in this description).Ok peeps (pun intended), ready for this? My poopy booty girls were not as difficult to catch as I had expected (pleasant surprise). As I was cleaning the poo crusted feathers with warm soapy water and a wash cloth I found lice!pretty sure they were lice. Whitish bodies with a slight pink tinge (guessing the punk tinge is from feasting on my pretties...). So, sevin dust?
It works very well! Some hens don't dustbath enough to get rid of the mites/lice. Most of mine do. It's the fancy birds (silkies, polish, houdans) of mine that aren't the best at finding the proper places to do the deedSweet idea! I was already planning on cleaning the coop and run and applying sevin dust before laying down clean shavings and hay. And then catching each bird to dust but, I would not have thought to add it to the dusting stations for self administration!!! I'm a small town hair dresser and have a few appts coming over soon. As soon as they are out the door I'm heading to Tractor Supply to get the Sevin dust and then it's Operation De Louse!!!!
