Hello and welcome to BYC

Glad you joined us! You got some good advice here. Good luck!

Ok peeps (pun intended), ready for this? My poopy booty girls were not as difficult to catch as I had expected (pleasant surprise). As I was cleaning the poo crusted feathers with warm soapy water and a wash cloth I found lice! :( pretty sure they were lice. Whitish bodies with a slight pink tinge (guessing the punk tinge is from feasting on my pretties...). So, sevin dust?

Sevin dust and clean their coop. Don't worry too much. Poultry crawlies are very common. Lice doesn't cause as many issues as mites (which don't live on the body, but come out at night to feed - not talking northern fowl mite in this description).

Sevin will take care of both mites and lice. Clean out their coop and spread sevin in there as well. I add sevin to their dust bath stations so they can self administer after the initial administration.

Sweet idea! I was already planning on cleaning the coop and run and applying sevin dust before laying down clean shavings and hay. And then catching each bird to dust but, I would not have thought to add it to the dusting stations for self administration!!! I'm a small town hair dresser and have a few appts coming over soon. As soon as they are out the door I'm heading to Tractor Supply to get the Sevin dust and then it's Operation De Louse!!!!

It works very well! Some hens don't dustbath enough to get rid of the mites/lice. Most of mine do. It's the fancy birds (silkies, polish, houdans) of mine that aren't the best at finding the proper places to do the deed :p

Mine is an old kiddie pool filled with black earth, sevin dust and possible shavings from their bedding thrown in (not by me) I have also read about using lime in the concoction, but it should be a certain type, and I am not quite sure what type that is. Right now black earth and sevin works really well. they LOVE it! This is why you also put the sevin in their shavings. Try to keep the food and water away from the dust. I put mine up on cinder blocks to keep shavings out. :)
