Insect larvae from pond --new food source for chickens?

I was pulling out the old leaves in my tiny pond and saw all these wierd worm like creatrues about 1/2 an inch long. They are white/clear with a tubular body and long thin white tail floating from the end. I am hoping they are some poor insect's offspring that I killed off by letting the chickens eat them. The chickens liked them alot. Or they are something nasty that will hurt the chickens. I am in the process of worming. It's all too similar and distasteful. Anyone know what those creatures are that they ate?
I am a firm believer that the chickens know what is best for them and won't eat it if it is not good. Am I naive?

If they'll eat them, I would certainly feed them. High protein, just takes a lot to make a meal.
