Awwwww
Sorry BYC Family!
I wish I could say I was 100% better, but I have had a number of issues that have popped up since I last posted on here. Not only that but the stresses of standardized testing have eaten a great amount of my time.
I made it to Miami Beach in early April before testing. GREAT time. Once I returned from several surgeries plus the trip it was time to get gung-ho testing. My students performed VERY well. The Cool Dude Academy, of which you may have read a bit about in the newspaper articles in this thread, had done VERY well. They were a group of "at-risk" males at my school. Majority African-American. And the only class in the school of which EVERY student showed growth on the End-of-Grade tests. Growth ranged from 3 to 23 points. Amazing!
I have a reward for the two guys that had the highest growth and the two with the highest scores: a day trip to Kings Dominion in Richmond, VA, my hometown. Interested in helping cover the costs? PLease let me know! lol Otherwise, I'll be doing it all.
Anywho....the class was a success.
I've taught 6th grade in previous years and have always thought, "Eh, I'll see them next year." But I've spent many crying nights thinking that this group of students will be parting ways and the chances of seeing them again will be slight.
The Flock? My flock of bantams have remained the same for the most part. I have had a HUGE hawk problem however and it's taken a heavy toll on my flock as of late....so, they haven't been ranging as often. I have ducks now too, and they are fun!
I've built a sizable pond near the coops and I find great pleasure in simply sitting out there and watching the birds scratch about. I have one Black Rosecomb hen sitting on 8 eggs. I could hear the chirps from the eggs today and saw a crack on one egg. A neighborhood kid has already named that chick "Chance." The guy who cuts my lawn is an older white guy. He's highly amused that a young man like myself is raising chickens and that I am as knowledgeable as I am about the birds. He asked me today, "So did your parents live here or something?" I replied, " Nope. They are both in Virginia. It's just me." He laughed. And added that I didn't "Look" like the type to raise chickens.
That warmed my soul.
I'm rambling. I'll post again soon and have a better update!
@ Stoopid...I have 46 eggs in my incubator. ALL developing. 9 are Silkies and they are chirping and pipping as I type (Right next to the incubator). So I'll finally be able to add a Silkie to my flock.
Peace and Love
Luke
