Lazy J Bedding would like to introduce our chopped straw bedding product to you. This product works very well as bedding for chickens and we are finding a lot of interest from people with back yard chickens.

What makes our product different from a regular bale of straw? Our straw is chopped to a length of approximately 2-4 inches and then is compressed and packaged into 4.0 mil bags. You will find that shorter straw is much easier to work with compared to the longer straw that you get in a typical bale of straw. You will also have less waste, it is easier to clean the nesting beds and coops and it will compost much faster than shavings. The actual process of chopping and packaging the straw also helps us to distract the dust from the straw. This is a very clean wheat straw product!

Our chopped straw is compressed and packaged into 4.0 mil weather proof bags. This will keep your straw dry and the bags make it easy to stack and store. You also will not have a mess when transporting the straw in your vehicle. The straw is compressed to 3.0 cubic feet and when loose is approximately 10 cubic feet. Each bag weighs approximately 25 lbs.

Our chopped straw product is also a great friend to the environment. First of all, the straw is taken from our wheat crops that are grown in the Washington / Idaho Palouse Region so it is a product that is grown every year. Think of the years it takes to grow a tree! And if you are interested in composting, you may want to give this a try. The chopped straw composts faster than shavings and customers find that it makes a fabulous soil amendment! We make sure that the straw has not been treated with any chemicals that will harm plants or animals so you are safe to use it for composting.

Our company also chops and packages a Certified Weed-Free grass hay mix. It is a combination of Timothy, Brome, Orchard Grass & Tall Fescue. We also compress and package this product in the 4.0 mil bags. People with older animals find that the hay is easier for their animals to chew and they do not waste as much as they do from a regular bale of hay. It also seems to work great if you have a “picky eater”.

We also carry a chopped alfalfa product. Again it is chopped and packaged in the same manner. This product is not certified weed-free however it is a very clean product. Each bag of the chopped alfalfa weighs approximately 45 lbs.

We are a family owned business started at the urging of local customers who were purchasing bales of hay and straw from us. A few of them requested that we chop their hay and/or straw and bag it for them and as word spread we found that we had a business in the making.

Our products are available at local feed stores throughout the Western parts of the United States. Check out our website at www.lazyjbedding.com for a store near you. If you don’t find a store in your area on our website, please contact us or ask your store to contact us as we most likely would be able to get the product into your favorite feed store. We can be reached toll-free at 877-885-2064 or 208-274-4632. You can also reach us by email: [email protected]

Thank you for taking the time to check us out. What a great forum you have and we wish you all the best with your amazing back yard chickens!

They don't supply it anywhere but in the Western States. Would you please consider adding Tractor Supply to your distribution list and the East Coast States. I suppose the Midwest States would appreciate it too.

Thank you for your attention.

Right now our products are only available in the Western States. It sounds like Tractor Supply is a popular supplier so we will contact them to see if we are able to get our products distributed through them. Also, you can help us by requesting our product at your local stores and ask them to contact their distributor about getting the products in. Thank you so much for the inquiries and for the suggestions as well!!! Thanks - the crew at Lazy J Bedding!

@Lazy J Bedding You mention that the bedding hasn't been treated with any chemicals that will harm plants or animals, but what chemicals has it been treated with?
Was wondering that also.....and about persistent herbicides, what chemicals was the crop treated with in the fields before harvest?
